Aloha Kakahiaka everyone,

Na Oiwi will be scheduling a membership meeting/email to all existing members. With the club in hiatus since the pandemic, we will need to establish new officers so we can update the Mainland Council and Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs that we still are here and ready to get active again.
I want to reach out to everyone and thank them for the support over the years and look forward to hearing from members on the direction the club will move forward in.

There are some tshirts the club has for sale. $7ea or 3 for $20
They are the Kapu Aloha, and We Are Mauna Kea designs.
Please PM me directly if interested, we can ship, but that would be an extra charge.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Mahalo,
Ryan Studebaker
2nd VP

Sharing in case you are in Las Vegas….

CALL FOR RESTAURANTS, VENDORS, and VOLUNTEERS!!! On Sunday, October 8, Taverna Costera () and First Friday Las Vegas () are teaming up to produce the 1st Annual Broke Da Mouth Food Festival, an event Chef Chris Mahon first put on in the Lahaina Gateway Shopping Center on Maui in 2012.

We will have three stages of live music and entertainment — including some of the finest acts direct from Maui — between the Taverna roof, the big stage in the main parking lot where First Friday is centered, and 18bin (). We will also have a poke competition brought to you by Aloha Shoyu (); Hawaiian food trucks; food tastings from your favorite Hawaiian and Arts District restaurants and beyond; Hawaii vendors; and a Keiki corner for the kids.

This will be a free event, and THE Maui benefit you won’t want to miss. Oct. 8 is quickly approaching, and we are looking for restaurants, vendors, and volunteers, so please email us at [email protected] if you want to participate!

And don’t forget that Taverna Costera is a Maui donation center, so please bring any necessities (including clothing, feminine and child care products) to Taverna and get 10% off your food and drink bill, and we will get it to Maui.

We hope to see you here Oct. 8!

Interesting facts….Aloha.

One of the most sacred islands in the Hawaiian archipelago is Mokumanamana which contains over 52 archaeological sites and the highest concentration of heiau (religious temples/shrines) in Hawaiʻi. The stone structures include paehumu (platforms), paepae (terraces) and manamana (upright markers). Current research by Kānaka scholars is uncovering ancestral knowledge related to celestial alignments, voyaging practices, time calibration and religious ideology. Unique kiʻi pōhaku (stone images), not seen elsewhere in Hawaiʻi, were fabricated on island and once resided within the heiau until their removal in 1893.

Mokumanamana, Kamokumanamana, Hā‘ena (Necker Island)
Mokumanamana is often translated as “branched” or “pinnacled,” which is a suitable description of the island. But many people who have studied its religious and cultural sites suggest that the repetition of the word mana (spiritual power) after the word moku (island) relates to the spiritual significance of the island, given the 33 shrines along its kua (spine) and the Hawaiian axis of life and death that cross directly over it. The name Hā‘ena, defined as “red-hot burning heat,” possibly refers to the intensity of a specific kapu (restriction) or sacredness of the island. Hanakeaumoe, meaning “late night bay,” refers to Shark’s Bay. Hana means “bay” while au refers to a type of movement from one period of time and space to another, and moe implies “to put to rest” or pass on to the afterlife. Together they reference Ke Ala Polohiwa a Kāne or “the Dark Shining Path of Kāne,” often used as a metaphor for the path to the afterlife.

Aloha Uncle.

“Alooooooha!!!”
I can hear uncle Danny Kaniala Kaleikini welcoming everyone with his signature way of say, “Aloha.”. I have so many great memories of Danny. When I was a kid I always looked up to him cuz he was so Aloha, charismatic, always happy to see people, kind and full of sunshine. He will always be the Ambassador of “ALOHA.” Goodbye, Danny and mahalo. Love you, Kapono

Hauoli La Hanau.

Hauoli La Hanau e Queen Liliuokalani!

On September 2, 1912, Liliuokalani celebrated her 74th birthday with a reception at her home Washington Place. She was dressed in a lavender silk gown. Standing beside her were Prince and Princess Kalanianaole, and Princess Kawananako. The guests were presented to the royal entourage by John Aimoku Dominis.

Ten years earlier, her 64th birthday was celebrated with an afternoon reception for the general public. That year she received her guests in the Waikiki parlor of Washington Place assisted by Prince and Princess Kawananakoa and Archibald S. Cleghorn.

A private party for friends in the evening included music and dancing. The long day started with morning hookupu (gifts), primarily mele, which were brought and presented to the Queen from residents from all across the island.
