Houses, like cities, are like people. They have personalities and hearts and their own unique quirks & flair. Last night we bid 27th Ave a final farewell. What a gem, you are! 💎 So many dinners and parties and holidays and movies on the couch, you were good to us - despite our wicked, wretched and very cruel neighbor Ursula, whom you may recall, turned 10-year-old girls playing basketball into a criminal offense —- yes, even her myopic self centeredness could not tarnish the joy we experienced here. Shout out to the rest of our neighbors who are simply the best - we will miss having you so close!!! I love that it sounds like we are moving out of the country or something, I do lean towards the dramatic 🥰😆. Excited for our new home and many new memories!! ♥️🏠

Meet Opal Lee, the mother of Juneteenth, was 89 years old when she decided to do something:

“I felt like I should walk from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C. to make people aware that Juneteenth needed to be a national holiday,” Lee explains. “So I walked two and a half miles that afternoon. The next day I got up and started where I left off. And I walked.”

Historically mothers have been the greatest advocates for children. If you want something done, ask a mother.

Hi Yummy Fam and Happy Friday

I wrote this article for Essence this week and wanted to share. The kids and I were featured in Essence online during Mother’s Day back in 2014 and I saw the value of sharing some of the journey between those two photos.

During pride month especially I feel it’s so important to share stories of families and individuals in the LGBTQ+ community and their allies that expresses the road traveled not just the destination.

The obstacle course of biases societal enforced norms and thought forms that get in the way of each person being themselves.

In the article I share some of my own personal parenting and thought journey that wasn’t pretty but was definitely necessary to get to where I am today.

I believe hearts and minds are moved with proximity and exposure to human stories of people who they think are unlike them but underneath we are all the same in that we want to feel seen loved and accepted as we are.

From what I can see In the end it’s all about us loving ourselves and being ourselves so that we can allow others to do the same including our children.

The only day of work I have ever missed in my entire career was this week. They had to send a doctor to my house to shoot me up with some super powered antibiotics and then *P**F* I was back on set shooting in Malibu two days later.😂🤒🤧🏖️ Guys guys guys - are we busting out these bikinis for Con? 🤣😆😂👙👙👙

Today we remember the 19 students and 2 teachers who were brutally murdered at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde Texas. If you’ve followed me long enough, you know how my heart just shatters to pieces every time another child is killed by gun violence.
I am attaching a few slides with some facts about gun violence in America if you want to scroll. But don’t troll on my comments and debate the facts! It’s a health crisis this point and it’s time we made a priority to ! It won’t stop tomorrow. It won’t stop ever but we have to try to make it not so easy!

This first one was moments before I threw up and then my legs buckled beneath me when I tried to stand up but — still the best thing ever. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mamas out there doing the hardest job on earth, along with the 17 billion other things you are juggling at the same time. The world continues to spin because of you all. 🫶❤️🌟💥🙏🥰❤️

Ohmygoodness, I can’t believe it 😢🥺💔 This is a shock. Sam Rubin was the sweetest of people. The most informed and curious interviewer. Always listening, always funny, with a whip smart wit and the best laugh. My heart goes out to his family and his colleagues. He will be sorely missed by all. These are the only photos I can find of my own, but I have so many memories of him interviewing me over the years. 💔🙏

I am in awe of the grace, the tenacity, the power, and the indomitably hopeful spirit of Gabby Giffords. It was a great honor to meet her and her equally unyielding partner Senator Mark Kelly to support the GIFFORDS organization and its mission to end gun violence. This is not a partisan issue, it is a human and safety issue. I urge you to support this organization that is affecting change in policies as well as hearts and minds.

I stand with them and all of the human beings in this country demanding safety for our children & families — in the home, in our schools, in our places of worship, and on our streets.

Some stats:
Guns are the *leading cause of death* for children in the United States. (Read that again, *the leading cause of death of children*😳💔.)

Domestic violence victims are 5 X MORE LIKELY to be killed when their abuser has access to a gun. 😳 💔

Gun violence kills 43,000 Americans a year. 😳 💔

Over the course of EVERY AMERICAN’s LIFETIME, they will know someone who loses their life to gun violence. 😳💔

Has it happened to you yet? What are you waiting for? I never thought it would happen to me or my family, but my daughter was only 8 years old when gun violence impacted our family. How high will that number rise by the time she is in high school? In college?
Don’t wait until this happens to you to take action. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

We all want to protect our kids from tragedy and then life happens and we can’t. We also think they are so fragile that it’s better to not talk about difficult things. But when we avoid talking about what our kids are going through, we delegitimize their experience and deny their feelings. The more that we ask Scarlett to talk about her thoughts and feelings, the more she heals, the more she opens her heart , and the more empathy she develops. She becomes more in tune with both herself and the world around her. We can handle hard things. And so can our kids. I'm so proud of Scarlett for joining this cause and enlisting several of her friends and our puppy, Rocket!

Pierce was the son of dear friends of ours, and his death has had a major impact on our family. While Scarlett did not know him very well - she has had a particularly tough time metabolizing this loss for a multitude of reasons, and has felt very alone because none of her friends knew Pierce and they do not have any connection to him. She has had a hard time with this often at school, and has wanted to talk about it and include her friends - to help her heal.

This kid-led event which is bringing together the boys from Pierce's class at Stuart Hall (currently 6th graders, they were in 3rd grade when this tragedy happened) and the kids from United Playaz, is a beautiful way to allow these kids to process their grief and try to make a difference in the future, whilst also bridging a major divide between the vastly different lived experience of the kids from Stuart Hall and those from United Playaz.
