Literacy affects every aspect of a child’s life and their functioning in society as an adult. That’s why the CPS is recommending that primary care providers regularly ask about reading routines and any reading difficulties a family or child may experience.

Great podcast! No wonder so many 🇨🇦 teachers are using U”fly”. We ❤️ to hear them explain components of Play Roly:
- why we use face pictures of Roly’s phonemes when we introduce letters (helps phonemic awareness)
- why we playfully teach decoding with just 11 letters at ages 3-5
There’s a Facebook group of UFLI teachers sharing ideas too: UFLI Foundations Community: Building Strong Readers
🎙 Today’s episode features Dr. Holly Lane! This Mom Loves by Kate Winn and Holly unpack foundational reading and spelling instruction, clarifying how we can give all students a strong start to reading and writing

Playing with Roly is a playful start to decoding words on your own!
Engaging kids with Roly’s exaggerated phonemes - sssuuuuunnnnn means sun - unlocks 🔐phonemic awareness, a key foundational reading skill that is fun and easy to learn in Play Roly 1.
Play along daily to the six 1.5- minute videos in Play Roly 1 (mmmaaaannn for man, ssssuuunnn for sun, mmmaaat for mat, ssssaaammm for Sam, mmmuuummm for mum, ssssaaat for sat) until your child is fluent in Roly’s language: can easily tell you what Roly is saying by verbally blending his 3 letter-sounds together.
How long does it take for a child to learn Roly’s language? Generally from 1-12 videos.
Once kids learn Roly’s language, they are set up to succeed with the rest of the program where they learn the alphabetic principle and read you these free books:

After our own hearts ❤️. This informative episode about the advantages of a Speech to Print approach is a must-hear. Reading Simplified and Phonic Books Ltd founders discuss the research behind the concept and explain how a phoneme-centric approach works.
Our favourite parts: demonstrating exaggerated phonemes in a reading lesson (mmmmaaaaat - what we call “speaking Roly’s language”) and the importance of teaching the alphabetic principle early to help kids “crack the reading code” and get to reading text.

Cortex in the Classroom: Advancing the Science of Reading in the Early Years
Teaching the Way They Learn Foundation
Dr. Linda Siegel and Morgan & Lisa Sturdy are pleased to bring you Play Roly, the first initiative of Teaching the Way they Learn Foundation. Our goal: to prevent reading delays and nurture the joy of reading for ALL kids. One day we hope all children sing and play this 2-minute song and ball-rolling game at age 3+ the way all children sing the alphabet song now. Why? With Play Roly, it is SO EASY to teach ALL children the essential-for-reading skill known as phonological awareness at ages 3 to 5 in order to set them up for reading success at school. (Very often parents and educators have no idea that kids haven’t strengthened this skill age-appropriately - it is really difficult to tell when this is the case). The game is designed so that even children who do not easily discern phonemes within speech can learn age-appropriately with Play Roly (for more see The Science page of our website www.playroly.org). Game play is always the same and kids have no idea they are learning. As children progress from learning the song and ball-rolling, they begin to guess what Roly is “saying” as he speaks his language of 3 letter sounds (held without breaks between to make it easier). Happiness is seeing a preschooler select the 3 sounds Roly will speak to “teach” their toys the game - this is verbal segmenting - an essential skill for learning to read. Verbal. Pre-ABC’s and phonics.
These postcards are being printed and distributed to families and early learning partners in West Vancouver - if you need higher resolution for your area than is on the website, just let us know - we can provide higher resolution files (no charge - this a not-for-profit initiative).
