The Community Food Network had it's first ever annual gathering! On November 6th and 7th, Malahat Nation hosted 20 people from seven of our ten Member Nations. We toured Malahat's impressive Community Garden and Medicine Garden, shared a dinner together, and learned from Quw'ustun chef, language learner, and educator, Jared Qwustenuxun Williams on a traditional cooking of salmon over the fire. After another beautiful meal together, everyone participated in a food trade. Let us know if your community would like to host the next gathering!

Naut'sa mawt Tribal Council organized another successful CCP Workshop! Co-hosted by Osoyoos Indian Band and Indigenous Service Canada, the BC Regional October 2023 Comprehensive Community Planning (CCP) Workshop was held at Spirit Ridge Resort in Osoyoos, BC, October 24-26, 2023.

The October 2023 workshop theme was “Making Things Right”. We explored the ways in which planning can create positive change in community and be an important part of correcting wrongs, revitalizing culture and language, reconnecting communities, and supporting repatriation, climate change readiness, emergency preparedness and recovery, and health and wellness. First Nation-to-First Nation learning and capacity building are the anchoring principles of the workshop. We had an excellent turn out this year, with 120 participants total in which 42 BC First Nations were represented, and 5 out-of-province First Nations were represented.

Last week NmTC hosted our 2022/23 AGM, Ts’its’uwatul’ - “Helping each other out” was the theme for the reporting year. We celebrated 40 years of our incorporation as a non-profit society! To commemorate 40 years of the Tribal Council, we hosted a Unification Ceremony. Cultural work and protocol were conducted with the sacred Shulmuhwtsus Ceremony, where cultural workers were hired from different Nations on the Island, to prepare and deliver the drum in a good way. Each Board of Director signed the Unification Drum as a recommitment to each other, Member Nations and the Naut’sa mawt Tribal Council. The Unification Drum holds immense cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous peoples. It symbolizes the coming together of diverse Nations through the fostering of harmony, respect, and collaboration. The signing of the renewed Unification Drum represents a commitment from each Member Nation to work collectively towards the betterment of their communities and the ongoing preservation of their rich heritage.

Highlights from our two-day event were leadership training with Christopher Derickson; Governance training with Anne Moskow; and banquet dinner with entertainment by Ed Peekeekoot.

NmTC would like to thank those who made the time to attend, Elders, Board of Directors, Chief and Councils, CAO’s. We raise our hands to the NmTC team for all their hard work and coming together to make this happen. A special thank you to our Naut’sa mawt Event Management team for pulling off such a successful event!

It was a special couple of days having our Youth and Elders gather to share meals and stories together. The gathering was hosted at Stz’uminus Community Centre, with an opening welcome by Elder George Harris, followed by the Young Wolves Group who opened the day with song and dance. Tylyn Fasciglione brought us all through a drum making workshop, where we used deer skin to learn how to make a traditional drum. It is so important for our Elders and Youth to come together to share knowledge of our culture, teachings, and language. The gathering concluded in drumming and songs by Stz’uminus Elder George Harris and Youth Council members Eve Bob and Kianna Watts of Snaw’naw’as.

Eight of our staff joined the Malahat Every Child Matters March, where we walked along side Malahat staff and community, as well as Brentwood College students and staff, from the Malahat Nation to Brentwood College. The walk finished off with a lovely lunch served by Brentwood College, and words were shared from Elders and SD79 representative about the impacts of residential schools and the importance our Children have in our culture.

A couple of weeks after the march, we had a team-to-team meeting with the Malahat Leadership team. We met with Josh Handysides, CAO, and his Senior Staff. We never go hungry at any of these meetings, and everyone brought something to contribute to the spread for that afternoon! Discussions around how to best work together not only NmTC to the Malahat Nation, but each NmTC Member Nation with one another. Josh believes in sharing resources, information, documents, and policies with neighbouring Nations because a Nation is only stronger when other Nations are succeeding as well. This belief embraces the true meaning of Naut’sa mawt. We look forward to continue working with Malahat Nation on the many projects they have coming up!

The NmTC team has been keeping busy and on the road with community events. Here is a recap!

We attended Homalco Days, where the community hosted a three-day event for on and off reserve community members. NmTC was honoured to host a table at the Indigenous Music Festival Day, where we introduced ourselves to many community members and gave out swag!

On National Indigenous People’s Day, our team hosted a table at the celebration in Transfer Beach which was organized by Stz’uminus First Nation. The team at Stz’uminus did an incredible job organizing the event; there were bouncy castles, games, activities, and free hot lunch served by staff – including homemade frybread! Our team was honoured to be invited to this event. We loved seeing the children's faces light up as we handed out free orange shirts!

The NmTC Member Services team has continued the Community Visits, and here’s a recap!

To start off the day, we took Elder George Harris, who sits on our Elder’s Council, out for lunch before we made our way to a team-to-team meeting with Stz’uminus. We met with newly elected Chief John Elliott, Trevor Gatzke, Director of Administration, and his Senior Staff. We talked about the importance of community-centered approach, including youth in more projects and discussions, heard about upcoming projects and growth happening at the Nation.

On a sunny afternoon, we pulled up to the Snaw-naw-as Administration buildings and the first thing we all noticed was the beautiful new building on the right of the road! We met with Cory Bob, CAO, Jim Bob Sr., who sits on our Elder’s Council, Kianna Watts, who sits on our Youth Council, and Senior Staff. It was inspiring to hear Cory Bob talk about the challenges they had with completing this building, but along with that came growth and change with contractors they were working with. New businesses, new buildings, and a campground update in progress, the team at Snaw-naw-as has been completing huge projects for their community! Our meeting ended with a lovely meal prepared by a community cook, and we all left with tummies full of delicious frybread!

Naut'sa mawt would like to congratulate the newly elected Chief Gordon Harry and the respected Council! Gordon has been a dedicated board member for the last four years, and we are honoured to continue working with him. Naut'sa mawt is excited to continue supporting the important work happening within Malahat Nation.

National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S

On May 5, People across Turtle Island will stand together to hold our lost women, girls, boys, men, and 2-Spirit people close to our hearts. Our culture teaches us that the colour red is the only colour that spirts can see. So, on this day, we will wear our red dresses, shirts, and beadwork to help our missing loved ones find their way home. We are all one. Support is available through the National 24/7 MMIWG crisis line at 1-844-413-6649.
