Thank you for your service

Our hearts are broken. Steve Zuckerman, a full-time paramedic with Eagle County Paramedic Services, died while responding to a backcountry rescue call today in Vail. He was 61 years old.

“Steve was one of the helpers,” said Eagle County Paramedic Services CEO Brandon Daruna. “He never missed an opportunity to contribute and his death leaves a giant void in our organization and community.”

Steve worked Beaver Creek Ski Patrol for more than 25 years and started as a part-time paramedic with Eagle County Paramedic Services in April 2008. He joined our full-time staff in May 2013. He was a member of the Search and Rescue team, a field trainer and was in training as a critical care paramedic. He also served as medical director for the World Cup races in Beaver Creek.

In a social media post for Eagle County Paramedic Services, Steve wrote, “EMS is a team sport and I work on an amazing team. Each day brings new challenges and new opportunities to practice field emergency medicine and to make a small difference.”

Steve made a difference every day; there are really no words.

Saguache SAR was called out for the first mission of the year today. Dispatch received a notification of an InReach device activation. SAR responded to the area on Cochetope Pass. Contact was made with the subject and a text message sent by the InReach was misinterpreted by family. Everything was 10-4. A great way to knock the rust off of our SAR personnel! 😀 Great views too!

More snow is on the way. A Special Avalanche Advisory is in effect for mountainous areas of Colorado through Monday. There is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3 of 5) avalanche danger across much of the state, and the danger will climb further with more storms expected during the weekend.

New snow and winds through the holiday weekend will increase the avalanche danger statewide. Very dangerous avalanche conditions will develop in some regions, with the most dangerous conditions developing Saturday afternoon and into Sunday. This new snow will overload a fragile snowpack, creating dangerous avalanche conditions. Go to Colorado.gov/avalanche to check the forecast for changing conditions.

A winter storm will impact the mountainous areas of Saguache County beginning tonight through Sunday. This storm will affect all mountain ranges in Saguache County: The Sangre de Cristo, Sawatch and La Garita Mountains. Expect much colder temperatures, high winds and significant winter precipitation. This storm will produce winter alpine conditions and the potential for avalanche, especially where fresh snow falls on N and NE facing slopes or protected couloirs with iced down snow from earlier storms. These conditions will also likely preclude the use of air rescue assets.
