The story of Ram is one of our favorites! 🥰
This special week kicks off the celebrations leading to the opening of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya! Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram, is a a place that holds spiritual, cultural and historical significance.
The Indian Ambassador to the US has said that the Ramayan is a bridge across geographies and teaches people about the complexities of human relationships and the eternal struggle between good and evil.
“The lessons and tales from Ramayan are passed down from generations, and it is hard to say exactly when one learns them. It’s as if one was born with them. The epic gives insights into the complexities of human relationships, governance and spirituality, dharma or duty, justice, sacrifice, loyalty, and the eternal struggle between good and evil. The Ramayan has something to teach us about each of these themes, among many other things.”
“The Ramayan is also a bridge across geographies. Stories from the epic are well known in many countries across Indo Pacific, from Cambodia to Indonesia, from Thailand to Laos. The epic has been reimagined, retold, included in the artistic, literary, and religious traditions of various societies incorporating their unique cultural nuances. I have been personally witness to this influence of Ramayan across boundaries,” the Ambassador said.
The epic poem of Ramayan speaks to something fundamental, our shared humanity, and reminds us that despite our diverse backgrounds, we share a common need for ethical principles, for reason and doing the right thing.
While the opening of the Ram Temple also carries some controversy, we send light and love that the beauty of the Temple and the shared principles continues to bring communities together!

Janamashtmi, the Indian holiday celebrating Krishna and his virtues of compassion, love, being mischievous and being a protector, is around the corner!

We are SO excited to launch our latest book, The Celebration of Holi! The South Asian holiday of Holi, also known as the festival of Spring, Colors and Love, celebrates the arrival of spring, the end of winter, and a time to start anew. It is celebrated around bonfires, with colored powder (also known as gulal) and water.

This week and next, talk to your kid’s teachers and principals and ask to come into the classroom and share about Diwali! Part 2 on the Importance of Traditions!
How do we create them?
While family traditions can center around holiday traditions, like having a large family dinner for Diwali, or making sweet treats to distribute to friends and family, they can also be non-holiday traditions. These can include creating a special family handshake or cheer, using special plates to celebrate birthdays or accomplishments, volunteering once a month at the local Temple, putting together care packages for family that is far away, reading a favorite book every Sunday afternoon together, making hand-made cards for neighbors once a month, or making seasonal cookies!
How do we keep them going?
The best things in life are free and simple! It’s no coincidence that traditions are likely to continue the simpler they are! Come up with 3-4 traditions that are easy, simple, and that don’t break the bank. Once you see how fun the family has with them, just keep them going!
