I am available for contract or long-term art and illustration projects. I specialize in information
Hi !
I'm Mesa, and I draw Science and Medical stuff, amongst other things.
I'm working toward being an author/illustrator of children's books.
Hello !
I'm a author/illustrator creating CNF/Informational fiction and comics.
Background as medical and illustrator and 💓 telling stories of science!

I just realized It's again, and was feeling frantic, so I got out the crowquil!
This is just what I was feeling like drawing today. One of my night garden pets.
I've been on a bit of a social hiatus. But came on today, and 's prompt "metallic" reminded me a rejected journal cover image I made a while back.
A scrap metal brain, all modeled in 3D.
Finally uploaded recent Project Animalia critters to my Society6 shop.
You can find them for sale here: https://society6.com/mesaschumacher/designs
Thanks everyone who has taken a little home, I am honored to have my art live with you!
Despite the name "p***s fish" this burrowing isn't a dick. It will share its burrow with clams, crabs, shrimp & fish!
Project Animalia
#649 Fat inkeeper worm (Urechis caupo)
***sfish
Pair of stick insects, doing their thing. Also known as "devil rider" and "musk mare."🤨
Project Animalia
#648 Southern two-striped walkingstick (Anisomorpha buprestoides)
What can I tell you about this colorful mussel? They burrow, they have simple eyes, and people think they're tasty!
Project Animalia
#647 Noble Scallop (Mimachlamys crassicostata)
A high body temp, predatory migratory badass.
Project Animalia
#646 Shortfin Mako Shark (Isurus oxyrinchus)
With gem drenched feathers, the Garnet pitta forages the forest floors of Indonesia and Malaysia.
Project Animalia
#645 Garnet pitta (Erythropitta granatina)
So a few weeks ago was red... this week I'm in a monotone mood.
Not so devilish, this deep sea ray!
Project Animalia #644 Devil fish (Mobula mobular)
This coloration really breaks up the outline. When I squint, I see an entirely different figure.
Project Animalia
#643 Pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta)
The "sea squab" is not a poisonous puffer, but this fish can still inflate using a special air chamber.
Project Animalia
#642 Northern puffer (Sphoeroides maculatus)
Not only one of the largest insect in the world, but can carry over 800X their own weight! Impressive.
Project Animalia
#640 Chief goliath beetle (Goliathus cacicus)
Another day, another swamp hen.
Project Animalia
#640 Grey-headed swamphen (Porphyrio poliocephalus)
August shouldn't be a stressful month, but this one is. I'm longing for some stability, more rest, and more time to create.
Project Animalia
#639 Tortoise cowry (Cypraea testudinaria)
At times called "white-tailed bumblebee" for that rump.
Project Animalia
#638 Canary Islands bumblebee (Bombus terrestris canariensis)
Oh penguins, how I love you! Jetlag, how I hate you.
Project Animalia
#637 Chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus)
A slug of a different color. Moving from red to yellow today.
Project Animalia
#636 Sea lemon (Doris pseudoargus)
I'm back in the South Pacific!
However, this is a sea star from the Mediterranean—the smoothest one.
Project Animalia
#635 Smooth starfish (Hacelia attenuata)
Well hello there!
All nudibranchs are sea slugs, but not all sea slugs are nudibranchs. 🧐
Square is to rectangle.
Project Animalia
#634 Club-gilled nudibranch (Amphorina pallida)
A speck of bright for your morning.
Also a swarmer, which comes in many colors!
Project Animalia #633 Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis)
Happy !
It is my honor and pleasure to spend my days (and nights) creating graphics science and medicine.
Visualizing the invisible, and making the incomprehensible clear!
A rare salamander, with toxin-producing skin glands! Salamanders have been on earth since the mid Jurassic.
Project Animalia
#632 Mud salamander (Pseudotriton montanus)
Project Animalia #631
James's flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi)
I've been all about the red hues this week! This acquires its pink color from a carotene-rich diet.
Project Animalia
#630 False cleaner wrasse (Aspidontus taeniatus)
What better way to grab a meal, or avoid being one by impersonating the "off limits" carwash fish of the reef? The underbite gives 'em away.
Project Animalia (returns again...)
629 Familiar bluet (Enallagma civile)
One of the brightest and most common species. Damselflies spend half their lives underwater, before taking to the air!
Project Animalia #628
Red masked parrot (Psittacara erythrogenys)
For Ross and Jen, who are getting married, and love the invasive of San Francisco!
Best wishes for you! 🥂🎉
Project Animalia
#627 Crested tit-warbler (Leptopoecile elegans)
I've heard t**s got their name from the tit mouse, "tit" meaning small. Here's a colorful example!
Project Animalia returns. There's so much vanishing daily, and I wanna draw.
#626 Crimson rosella (Platycercus elegans)Females often destroying each other's eggs in the nest. 🙄
And...at long last, I'm back with more ! Do you have a favorite animal you'd like to see me draw?
my Project Animalia series returns, with #625 Grey seal (Halichoerus grypus)
The "horse-headed" seal, which hauls out on North Atlantic beaches in vast numbers to breed (and battle).
It's been a slow year for me. Lots of medical adventures. Keeping my studio going, adjusting to the rapidly changing art landscape.
Nature adventures and pushing myself to grow in art have been the best stress valves.
What is good in life!

Project Animalia 623
Pelican eel (Dendrocopos leucopterus)
The deep sea is one of my current obsessions. Such incredible animals. Work with biota? I want to draw it! 😉
Project Animalia 622
White-winged woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucopterus)
A bit overwhelmed this way, but I'm not young anymore. I just have to keep chipping away at it.
Project Animalia 621
Blyth's Kingfisher (Alcedo hercules)
The largest of the kingfishers.
Enjoy your weekend!
Project Animalia 620
Common shiner (Luxilus cornutus)
I love drawing the shininess of shiners.
Project Animalia 619
Ash-black slug (Limax cinereoniger)
The largest European land slug (up to 8 inches) —a dark shape curling around forest logs and mushrooms.
Project Animalia 618
Pacific reef heron (Egretta sacra)
Missing Fiji's shores today! These guys are always around, fishing the reef, in shades of dark and white.
Project Animalia 617
Atlantic bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus)
A fast ocean predator (45+ mph) and as long as a human is tall.
