Clyde M. Barr Jr., 81, of Carlisle, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at M. S. Hershey Medical Center.

He was born January 21, 1937 in Lebanon, PA to the late Clyde M. Sr. and Rae Anna (Reber) Barr.

Clyde Barr graduated from Lebanon High School in 1954 with his sweetheart and wife-to-be, Linda (Brandt) Barr. After finishing at the U.S. Naval School of Music in DC, Mr. Barr served as musician and director of the U.S. Navy Band in Kodiak, Alaska and in Boston. He earned his BS in Masters of Music Education from West Chester State College, and received his Masters of Music from Indiana University (PA). He and his wife of 59 years, spent several summers as Camp Directors at Camp Hagan, in the Poconos.

Mr. Barr was band director at Carlisle High School from 1961 to 1977. Under his direction, they won numerous awards and prestigious honors, including two highly successful European concert tours, winning gold medals and World Championship honors. He founded the jazz band, "The Galaxies", and "The Artist in Concert" series, which brought famous "big bands" to the high school auditorium, which has been recently named, "The Clyde & Lyn Barr Auditorium".

Mr. Barr was elected president of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association and served as guest conductor for many honor bands. He was awarded "Outstanding Young Men of America Award", Kiwanis's "Hixon Award", the coveted "MAC Award", the "Molly Pitcher Award", and Carlisle's "Citizen of the Year Award".

In 1977, Mr. Barr became Director of Programs for the Music competitions held at all Six Flags Parks and served as director for the "All-Virginia Marching Band & Chorus". For almost four decades, he and his wife operated Educational Travel Experiences. He founded "The Sound of America Honor Band & Chorus" (formerly All Student Groups). He directed the band and served as Tour Director, enabling thousands of young musicians from every state to audition, travel and perform throughout Europe. He also was president of North American Music Festivals, providing adjudications and competitions for school ensembles. He created "The Young Presbyterian Singers", which also toured Europe.

Mr. Barr was a member of and served as choir director for First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, for many years. He was a member of Carlisle Kiwanis and Masonic Lodge 260. He was the Parade Chairman/Organizer of the 250th Anniversary Celebration of Cumberland County in 2000.

He is remembered for his kind and humorous nature, his ability to motivate and inspire, and to make students believe in themselves.

Clyde is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda B. Barr of Carlisle; one son, Scott A. (wife Sandi) Barr of Dupont, WA; one daughter, Terri (husband Barry) Davis of Ashburn, VA and two grandsons, Connor and Austin Barr.

A Memorial Service, "A Celebration of the Life of Clyde Barr", is to be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in the Parish Activity Center, 85 Marsh Drive Carlisle, PA 17015. A small graveside service will be held at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville on June 21, 2018 at 11:30 a.m.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: The Clyde Barr Scholarship c/o the CHS Band Boosters, PO Box 114, Carlisle, PA 17013. Checks should be made payable to, "CHS Band Boosters" with "Clyde Barr Scholarship" in the memo line.

The bigger memorial "Celebration of Life" service will be July 1, and the burial service will be held this Thurs, June 21.

Thursday June 21, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. A small graveside service will be held at
Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery
RR #2, Box 484, Indiantown Gap Rd.
Annville, PA 17003-9618

Although we anticipate this will be small and short, if anyone wants to attend, they may. This is a military cemetery and may require ID. The ceremony time is punctual.

A Celebration of the Life of Clyde Barr will be held on Sunday, July 1, at 1:30pm at the Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church Social Hall (87 Marsh Drive,
Carlisle, PA 17015).
A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family
