Tax scams are on the rise, so make sure you don’t get scammed this tax time!

There are many variations to this scam, however it normally starts with a 'robo-call' from a mobile number claiming that your Tax File Number (TFN) has been used illegally, and that if you don’t ‘Press 1’ to speak with a representative then you will be arrested. Alternatively, the recorded message may claim your TFN has been suspended and that you need to transfer your money to the 'ATO' for safekeeping.

Beware of 'robo-calls' from mobile numbers.

Scammers can also manipulate incoming caller ID and text messages to mimic local police stations, tax agents and the ATO to reel you in.

Do not engage, just hang up!

Payment methods have been demanded through ‘cardless cash’ ATM withdrawals, retail gift cards and even via a ‘courier service’ to collect cash. The police, ATO and government agencies will never request payment by these means or request sensitive information via phone, text or email.

Confirm by calling the ATO yourself. Do not send any money or purchase any gift cards!!!

It is recommended that you log into MyGov to view official ATO correspondence.

Seacliff Park Neighbourhood Watch - Feedback Required

The NHW group for Seacliff Park has meetings four times per year (February, May, August, November) at 7:30pm All-Saints Church on the corner of Lamington Avenue and Brighton Road.

Even though the group has not met after February last year because of Covid-19 restrictions the attendance at NHW meetings had been decreasing prior to that. In order to make some decisions about the future your NHW committee would appreciate community input. Without having sufficient direction from the community, we can’t continue to function in our present form.
Although we foreshadowed a meeting in February the committee feel it would be helpful to get some feedback before we plan this year’s agenda.

Could you please take a moment to respond to the following questions to give us some guidance as to what you require from your NHW group this year.

1. What can your committee provide to encourage you to attend a meeting for up to an hour and a half.

2. Are there any guest speakers you would particularly like to hear from?

3. Is the time and date of meetings acceptable? (currently last Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm)?

4. Do you have any concerns which you consider NHW could address?

Keep an eye out overnight for street roamers

There are people who roam the streets at night looking for opportunities to find unlocked cars, or even break into, if they know something valuable is inside.

Looks like we have one in the neighbourhood right now.

Ugly Behaviour in our Neighbourhood

Many people have enjoyed the new playground facilities at the Gully Reserve. Today around 2:30pm some teenagers pulled out all of the dog poo bags and wrapped them all over the kid’s park, and tied it to trees to try knock kids off their bikes on the man-made track.

A passer-by family was abused when they tried to do the right thing by asking the group to stop. The family salvaged as many of the bags as possible.

Not sure what the motivation was for undertaking this vandalism, but obviously some people have no respect.

If you do see any suspicious behaviour, incidents or damage in our neighbourhood you can report it by calling 131444.

SEACLIFF TENNIS CLUB WILL BE CELEBRATING ITS CENTENARY IN 2021.

We are compiling the club’s history, and have found there are significant gaps – particularly between 1940 and the early 1970s. If there are any of you out there who have any knowledge of the Club’s past, we welcome any contributions, whether they be personal memories, photos, videos, memorabilia or documents. Please contact us by email - [email protected].

We are also hoping to re-connect with past players and members, so we can welcome them to the centenary celebrations in 2021. We have set up a MailChimp mailing list for distributing information – please feel free to join the list if you are interested: subscribe here - http://eepurl.com/g6PyjP

A little history:

In 1921, a representation was made from a group of tennis enthusiasts to Council for a parcel of land in the SE corner of Maitland Square to be released for the purpose of playing tennis. The Council granted this request and a ten-year lease, with rent set at 10 shillings p.a. was apparently agreed to. This was the formation of the ‘Seacliff Tennis Club’. Currently, this site is the location of the Seacliff Community Kindergarten (corner of Kauri Parade and Maitland Street).

Two courts and facilities were built and in the early years of the club, games were largely social tennis by nature. A community event was held on 8 November 1924 to celebrate the commencement of club involvement in competition tennis.

In the early 1920s, Thomas Freebairn esquire subdivided land creating 77 building sites (known as Seacombe Park – now Seacliff Park) near Seacombe House, which was his home. This was on the east side of Brighton Road and he transferred one allotment (lot 78) in Aboyne Avenue to Council as a reserve for recreational use. Council planned for new local sporting developments to be located at this site.

Seacliff Tennis Club membership grew and in 1925 and early 1926, the Club held well attended community dances in the Kiosk Hall and raised money for 4 new courts at the Council supported site at Aboyne Avenue. In October 1926 another community dance was held at the Hall to celebrate the development of the new courts. The Hall was boldly decorated in the club colours, blue and gold.

No doubt buoyed by the prospect of four new courts at the Seacliff Reserve location, in October 1925 they pursued and became part of the inaugural ‘Holdfast Lawn Tennis Club Association’ – now Glenelg Districts Tennis Association.

In the 20s and 30s the club hosted very popular annual Easter Tournaments.

A larger clubhouse was built in 1956, organised by the then Secretary Ron Soar (at the time a policeman stationed at Seacliff). Aboyne Avenue tennis courts remained the principal site for the Club until 1991. Other sports (planned bowling and croquet) did not locate on the site and a water gravity tank was built in 1975 on the remaining land.

During the late 1970s and 1980s, the Club grew rapidly and by 1990-91 season had over 300 members, requiring the Club to lease up to an additional 14 courts for its tennis activities during the summer season. Holdfast Bay Council worked with the Club and local hockey clubs to develop a plan for new facilities at Kauri Parade Reserve, on the site of the defunct Brighton City Soccer club. The new sports centre included a split level clubroom and a dual purpose hockey pitch which was convertible to 12 synthetic grass tennis courts. It was used by Hockey in the winter and Tennis in the summer. The club played its first matches on this surface during the 1991/1992 tennis season. This became the new home for summer tennis competition with Aboyne Avenue retained for winter competition and social tennis.

In 2014 a bold new plan for development of the Kauri Community Sports Centre as a consolidated site for year round community tennis, hockey and netball at Lipson Avenue, Seacliff was agreed with Council. The facility at Aboyne Avenue was sold by council and 12 quality hardcourt tennis courts with lighting built on the southern part of John Mathwin Reserve and a new 3 story facility built for the participating sports clubs, the Music Centre and community use. The site is the new home of Seacliff Tennis Club year round and the clubhouse is shared.

The Seacliff Tennis Club commenced playing on the new courts in February 2016. The new building and upgraded carpark shared by tennis, hockey, netball, the Holdfast Bay Music Centre and the Council was opened by the Minister for Sport in August 2018.

Police warn of number plate theft

A spike in the reported theft of vehicle number plates in Adelaide’s south has prompted a community warning from police.

Unfortunately number plates are generally stolen to further additional crimes such as petrol theft.

However this crime, which can cause great inconvenience to the victim, can be easily prevented through the use of tamper proof screws.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Fitzgerald, from Southern Districts CIB, said police had closely examined theft reports in Adelaide’s south and found about 150 number plates had been reportedly stolen in the last four months.

“These thefts have occurred across a wide range of suburbs since 1 July, but we know that some areas have been hot spots for this type of crime.

“In particular we experienced a series of thefts from Camden Park, Kurralta Park, Plympton, Morphett Vale and Woodcroft.”

He said as a result police are urging motor vehicle owners to consider using Plate Safe screws to attach their number plates and to contact police if they notice anyone acting suspiciously around parked motor vehicles.

“Plate safe screws are a one-way, anti-theft screw which can be fitted with a standard flat bladed screwdriver,” he said.

“They are a simple way of preventing this type of theft, although police would also recommend that you park your car in a well-lit spot, or off the street in a garage or carport where possible.

“If you notice anyone acting in a suspicious manner around parked vehicles in your neighbourhood, call police immediately on 131 444 – prompt reporting can assist police in locating offenders and preventing further crimes occurring.

The RAA offers members free, tamper-resistant screws – and a referral to a repairer to fit them free of charge. For more details: https://www.raa.com.au/motor/safety-and-advice/car-advice

The Neighbourhood Watch Shop also offers Plate Safe security screws on it’s website: https://www.neighbourhoodwatchshop.com.au/

Liberal Party Postal Vote Application - Securing Your Information.

If you received a postal vote application form today from Nicole Flint which has a pre-paid envelope BE CAREFUL. The address is Reply Paid 85499 which is NOT the address for the AEC (Reply Paid 9867) which is most likely a Liberal Office address. So if a member of the Liberal Party opens the letter sent to them by you Nicole will have all your details and security answers as well as your signature, even if it is eventually passed onto the AEC. The simplest solution would have been to provide an envelope with the AEC address.

So you will be SAFER if you send application forms directly to the AEC yourself or complete the application online via the AEC website.
