Did you know that we offer Myofunctional Therapy services? More and more people today are born with deficiencies in their airway. One of the leading factors in this deficiency can be weak muscles of the mouth, especially the tongue. This airway deficiency is linked to developmental issues such as ADHD, misaligned teeth, grinding/clenching, digestive issues, and even early issues such as newborns with colic and trouble feeding. Myofunctional therapy is physical therapy for the face and tongue intended to help strengthen these muscles and allow them proper function to improve airway efficiency.

Dr. Lee and his team spent the weekend learning how to appreciate the impact of restricted tongue mobility. We want to give a huge thank you to Dr. Zaghi and Dr. Baxter for such an informative seminar!

Did you know that something so seemingly innocent as a tongue-tie, can affect a multitude of oral health outcomes? Symptoms such as mouth breathing, clenching/grinding, airway restriction, neck tension, and more can all be associated. We have really learned the importance and frequency of incidents in infants.

We can’t wait to continue implementing this new information to our daily practice and into your life as well!

BIOMEMETIC DENTISTRY

Some of you might have seen this “new “trend in dentistry and different social media platforms, TikTok being the main one. I found this interesting when I saw this and I figured I would take the time to discuss how relevant this idea is with today’s materials. This is the first relevant subject on dentistry that I have seen on the social media platforms. (please don’t believe in oil pulling, carbon toothpaste, etc..)

This concept of dentistry was really refined and written about by Dr. Pascal Magne in 2002. It is centered around the conservation of tooth structure by minimizing the reduction during the prepping of the tooth for a restoration. We are able to apply this concept due to the development of certain materials over the last 20 years. I had this concept introduced to me by my father through his use of gold restorations. We no longer have to use gold to do this. I had the opportunity to spend time with Dr. Magne a few years ago and have really tried to refine my skills towards this type of dentistry. It takes more skill and effort to perform and requires specific materials. One of the things that is over social media is the idea of “no longer doing crown preps.” This is essential to the philosophy, but can be misunderstood. A full crown prep reduces the tooth in all directions, almost 360° around the tooth as shown in the photo. Not only does this significantly weaken the tooth but it also causes more trauma and a higher probability of a root canal later. It presents the idea of more of a crown-lay where most of the tooth removal is from the chewing surface of the tooth and very little around the outside. It is still essential to protect many teeth from splitting or cracking with the use of a crown-lay. We still identify them as a crown, but in theory, because the reduction of the tooth is so minimal it’s not truly a full crown. many of you recently have noticed that I’ve had to numb people for delivering crowns. This is required because we have to move the gums out of the way in order to not contaminate the system when bonding the new “crown “. Again, more effort and inconvenience but in my opinion well worth it!

I had the pleasure of having dinner with Dr. Magne and a few of my friends that I consider exceptional dentists. We even had the opportunity to drive him back to the hotel. He and I had a great conversation about the same faith that we share. I found him to be one of the most humble individuals in dentistry.

There seems to be some confusion over our new arrangement with Delta Dental of Michigan. We want to be clear, our team will still be able to bill Delta Dental and get the coverage that you deserve. There is no need to switch dentist because you still have coverage with us. The new relationship still allows coverage for your dental care. There will be a small difference in the amount of coverage with this new relationship that we have. That difference applies to the extra cost of the high quality of work that you are used to. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to reach out to our patient coordinators.

And his name is……..

BOZEMAN!!!

A little back story as to why the two names were chosen. Dr. Lee and Brooke were in Bozeman, Montana this past summer when the saw an awesome looking Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. After some thought, they decided they wanted to get another dog and Dr. Lee wanted to have him as a friend for the team and our patients.❤️🐶

It’s been an amazing four days having Bozeman in the office and we look forward to the future with him.

We want to thank you all for your participation the past few days! It has been fun watching all the interactions and the voting. Dr. Lee truly appreciates you all helping him pick a name! Enjoy some more cute photos below😁

Have a great weekend everyone!

We are excited to announce the addition of Dr. Lee’s son, Dr. Jakob Lee, to our team!

Dr. Jake graduated from University of Detroit Mercy Dental School this past spring.

Dr. Jakob has been married for over three years to his wife, Colbie, and they have a cute doggy named Wrigley. Dr. Jake and his wife will make their home on the west side of Grand Rapids.

Rest assured, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! He has the same passion and enthusiasm that his dad shows daily in the quality of care given to each individual patient.

He is eager to start using his skills to help patients maintain their dental health. We are sure is fervor will shine brightly. His attentive, compassionate, and gentle care will add to what we feel we strive for daily in our practice.

The Lee family and our office are very proud of this third generation dentist addition!

Welcome Dr. Jakob!
