Cartooning the First World War in Wales

An HLF funded project at Cardiff University to digitise the Western Mail's wartime cartoons by leading cartoonist J.M. Staniforth.

During the First World War the Western Mail published over 1300 cartoons by the artist J.M. Staniforth, providing a unique day-by-day record of the war and the responses of the people of Wales to its momentous events. Each of these cartoons is now being digitised in an exciting new project run by Cardiff University's School of History, Archaeology and Religion, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund,

Our Visual Culture of the First World War Conference was a great success. If you haven't visited our new website yet please take a look. You can search all Staniforth's cartoons from the end of July 1914 to the end of November 1915 and more are being uploaded all the time.
