” 読む”（Yo-mu) means reading. Part of Year 2 Kanji study at Japanese Elementary school.

私は読書が好きです。I like reading books. (Watashi wa dokusyo ga suki desu.)
本を読む　I read books. (Hon wo yomu)

‘読書” (dokusyo) means reading books and “読む” (yomu) means “read writing or read someone’s mind.
“場の空気を読む” (Ba no Kuuki wo yomu) ＞＞＞その場の雰囲気から、自分がするべき事や相手がして欲しい事、して欲しくない事を判断する事。
There isn’t an exact translation of this. I guess “read between the lines” and “sense the atmosphere” are close.

A common phrase “Ba no Kuuki wo Yomu”, “understanding the situation without words” or “sensing someone’s feelings”, is a very important concept for understanding Japanese culture. The literal meaning is “reading air”. Because of this cultural trait, many foreign visitors feel that Japanese are very kind and thoughtful towards them during their short stay in Japan. But at the same time, understanding “reading air” and practicing it in daily life is very difficult, especially for those who were not raised in Japanese society.
