K2 will not be made available for 4/5 - change of course
K2 will not be made available for Joomla 4/5 - change of course - JoomlaWorks The writing's on the wall. Joomla 4 and 5 are failed CMS releases. They account for around 0.3% of ALL Joomla sites according to W3Techs (https://w3techs.com/technologies/details/cm-joomla). A bunch of helpful updates were added the past few weeks in K2:
Added new description field in tags to be used for SEO or other purposes, GSD now defines the site's timezone (and not GMT time) by default in items, added typical anti-crawling protection for itemlists and finally changed the behaviour of the category sub-template (theme) to allow overriding it, even when a category inherits its params from another category. This is super useful when you wish to make a slight override in the physical sub-template but maintain param inheritance.

Popular extensions according to ... (asked yesterday). Can you spot #1?
An update on K2 & its language packs: Apparently the translation platform we used (Transifex) did a massive change in their API & as such the automated language pack creation just broke. Their recent changes (both in the app & API) have made it unnecessary complex to work with. As such we've restored the last working language packs (on https://buff.ly/3KTSQtI) & are in the process of moving the translations over to GitHub.

Today we pushed a significant update in K2's Custom (advanced) SEF system. The new update is more performant & provides more flexibility in constructing your site's K2 URLs. Since K2 is now a rolling release, you can check detailed updates on the project's GitHub repo at https://buff.ly/3G9A8gf - As always, download from https://buff.ly/1RoXgDu or upgrade directly from Joomla.
Today we're launching Quick Menu, a new free admin module for 4 which adds a handy top-side (desktop) or bottom-side (mobile) menu in the Joomla 4 backend. Quick Menu restores UX sanity & reduces unnecessary clickity-click ๐

My guess is that and will also make it in 5 (which will honor backwards compati-hahaha...), you know, because it's part of the modern dev hype train too.
The sad state of "modern" 4 development. You need to remember a hundred class inclusions obviously to get what was readily available in J3, but hey, $app is magically available (this is admin's mod_user BTW). What drunk genius came up with this design?
To-do list for K2 in 2023:
- K2 as rolling release โ๏ธ
- K2 for 4 (coming in H1 2023)
- New K2 identity/logo ๐
- New K2 website with new documentation powered by GitHub to allow tracked changes and easier collaboration/contribution ๐
Updated K2 today (already available) resolving some final PHP 8 warnings/deprecations. Although Joomla 3 is recommended for up to PHP 8.0 (https://buff.ly/2u3t2a6), Joomla & K2 will run just fine on PHP 8.1 as we demonstrate on our little demo site: https://buff.ly/3CKd3ib

Naming variables is hard indeed...
5 is codenamed "Panta Rhei" & strongly emphasizes backwards compatibility. Yet, "Panta Rhei" is a famous saying from ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, which means "everything flows" (everything changes). Either a poor choice of words for the codename, or a subtle message to 3rd party devs.
Modern CSS is so cool, right?
A handy little service to assist with feedback from site visitors... It's called DeviceInfo.cc >> it runs purely client-side, has no ads whatsoever, is desktop/mobile friendly & it makes sharing visitor device info w/ site owners dead-simple: https://buff.ly/3vLPF10
Similar versions do exist (for many years already), but they are either outdated or overloaded with ads, plus most of the times it's just hard for the visitor to share their device info with a site owner, especially when they are on a mobile device.
DeviceInfo.cc | Device information for site feedback Have you recently stumbled on an issue with one of the sites you regularly visit? Would you like to suggest an improvement perhaps? Contact the site, describe the issue and share your device's information easily & anonymously using this web application. Your IP is never shared.
Simple Image Gallery Pro for 4 is coming along nicely & will be officially released really soon. The server-side part is completed (supporting the codebase of Joomla 1.5 up to 4) & now it's time to finalize "the looks".
Simple Image Gallery (free) v4.2 released - this is a maintenance release which improves compatibility with 4 - more info at:

Forgot to wish you all...
Every time, every goddamn time, I do the multilanguage setup on a site...
A little late to the party (as I'm done with politics for some time now) but this https://buff.ly/3oNv6xH is really sad news for the Joomla Community. On the flipside, I can't blame them. It's like the Joomla core team does everything in their power to drive 3rd party devs away.
Friendly announcement.
