Our Story
Mission Statement
Los Jardines' mission is to build an aquaponics education center consisting of various sizes of aquaponics facilities, meeting areas for groups. Along with the aquaponics, we will build 8 vacation rental units with pool & recreation areas in order to financially sustain the aquaponics education center and fund the distribution of food produced in the greenhouses and provide aquaponics equipment to impoverished people in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. We intend to build all our structures using the green building method of ICF construction and integrating solar power and water conservation methods. No chemicals or artificial fertilizers will be used in the production of food or near food producing buildings.
Vision Statement
Los Jardines is a free education center where we provide Costa Rican people with the knowledge and equipment to produce nutritious, organic food through the self sustaining method of aquaponics. We are self funded through vacation rentals located within Los Jardines in which visitors have the opportunity to work along side Costa Ricans to learn aquaponics and help distribute food and equipment to impoverished people. We strive to be completely open and honest regarding all aspects of Los Jardines.
The Dream
It all started with a desire to live somewhere warm and sunny. While researching different locations, we came across Costa Rica and learned that they average 180 more sunny days per year than Illinois where we currently reside. The average temperature all year is 85 degrees Fahrenheit; perfect for our Aquaponics set up and our love for being out doors. So, we started talking about how we could make it happen and realized that we should probably make a visit there to see if we even liked it before making concrete plans. After talking with friends who had been there before we settled on the Tamarindo, Guanacasta area. Well, needless to say, we loved it. However, while we were there, it was easy to see the income disparity. We learned that the average wage for a Costa Rican is about $3 per hour. We noticed that food costs and the cost of eating out was not much different than back home. With the rise of tourism came the rise of food costs without an equal rise in wages. We didn't want to just move there and become a part of the problem so what could we do? And the dream was born.
Our plan is to build an Aquaponics education center that would be supported by vacation rentals on the property. Local people as well as visitors of Los Jardines will be able to learn how to feed their families using the self sustaining methods of Aquaponics and Permaculture for free. Food grown in the Aquaponics education center will be distributed through local charities to families in need or sold at market with the proceeds going to help those in need. Our guests can take advantage of the free aquaponics education, assist in distributing food, or simply relax and enjoy a vacation in one of the most beautiful places on earth knowing that their stay is helping to feed the world.
