Trusting God When Bad News Comes 30/04/2022

Trusting God When Bad News Comes “Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure; they will have no fear.” Psalm 112:6-8 Heavenly Father, I am curious, intrigued—make that, drawn to the he...

TGC’s Manifesto: Prioritize Your Church! 20/08/2021

Why be a flesh-and-blood part of a local congregation when there are so many other options available? Because "...when I’m at church, I’m part of the one institution in this world that won’t eventually collapse." Because the gospel isn't just meant to be proclaimed, but embodied in all its challenges and discomforts. Because, as C. S. Lewis said, "There will come a time when every culture, every institution, every nation...is extinct and every one of us [in the church] is still alive." Go to church this Sunday. If you don't want to go alone and you live in H-town, meet me at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church at 9:45, by the fireplace.

TGC’s Manifesto: Prioritize Your Church! Committed membership in a church, even though imperfect, is still your best shot to live a faithful Christian life. Hear it from TGC: prioritize your local church.

..For decades now as a grown-up girl I've had an on-going dialogue with God around a story called The Horse Whisperer. In 1995, I read the novel by Nicholas Evans. In 1998, I saw the movie version starring an aging but still very handsome Robert Redford. Then I saw it again. And again. I couldn't say for certain what thread God was pulling as I watched, but the line was taut, not slack. And I felt it every time...

"Finding the Spot" 5.12.21 https://conta.cc/3eGpUq9
Since he's become blind my boy Burley has developed a strong affinity for the left-hand side of the sofa...one and a half cushions of it, no pillows if possible. It's his go-to spot....the place he is most comfortable and feels the most secure. He likes to nestle against the low, rolled armrest and wedge himself in, whether he's asleep or awake...He knows it. He likes it. He owns it."

Perspective | On Mothers’ Day, many childless women feel overlooked by churches 04/05/2021

I've always struggled with this day, for many very personal reasons. Most people don't get it. Karen Swallow Prior clearly does. I remember sitting in the pew one Mother's Day Sunday years ago and hearing my pastor say "Motherhood is the highest calling God can give to any woman." Some women's hearts must have soared with pride to hear that. I felt nothing but shame. If I could have crawled out unnoticed that morning, I would have. My feelings are so complicated that I can't begin to parse them here, nor would I. To my friends who are mothers, I love and admire you (with some envy mixed in). Bless you. Please give me a bit of room this Sunday to be before God just as I am, and maybe ask Him to bless me, too.

Perspective | On Mothers’ Day, many childless women feel overlooked by churches No really, childless women don’t need a carnation.

I live between families each with two small children. Their boys closest in age have become fast friends. From their backyards, they talk to each other over mine. So many souvenirs from the past seem to grow smaller with the years--all out of proportion to the woman I am today. But the God of my yesterdays never shrinks. He grows bigger and bigger with each passing year...."
