Rebecca Gomez Farrell - The Gourmez

I'm a writer of fictions and strong leisure time opinions, a speculative fiction author and a food and drink blogger. Nice to meet you!

You'll find my latest blog posts here, and my latest publication news. My fantasy novel, Wings Unseen, is available from Meerkat Press. My name's Rebecca Gomez Farrell, and I'm a writer. My biggest passion is my fiction, and I've had short stories and a novella traditionally published in the genres of horror, romance, steampunk, and urban fantasy. I am currently seeking publication for my epic fan

I am super excited to be reading at Rooftop Readings at Barrow's Intense Tasting Room in Brooklyn on April 18 at 7pm! The Rooftop Readings series - currently indoors and not on a rooftop -- is organized by the super-awesome debut novelist and super-talented entertainment journalist Randee Dawn. This reading will also feature Nadia Uddin, Richie Narvaez, and Katharine Duckett!

Barrow's is at 86th 34th Street, Brooklyn, NY (D train to 36th Avenue, then about a 5 minute walk). You DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE A TICKET to attend, but if you'd like a drink while you're listening, please make sure to snap one up for $10 at Eventbrite. Which honestly? A cocktail in Brooklyn for $10? What a deal! Nevermind the entertainment! Purchase a ticket here: https://buff.ly/3G9ZVEZ and learn more about the Rooftop Reading Series here: https://buff.ly/3Mq63wT

Yes, this is basically my springtime promo blog tour for Wings Unfurled, and I cannot wait to share this sequel with East Coast epic fantasy fans! SF in SF went great, and now NYC will get its own taste of this book. And I'll get to taste Barrow's Intense Ginger Liquor, and honestly, I'm probably just as excited for that.

See you then, New Yorkers!

Wings Unfurled by Rebecca Gomez Farrell 16/12/2022

This blog tour review of Wings Unfurled is glowing! Thanks to Monty's Book Reviews for sharing their thoughts. Here's a snippet:

"An enthralling story told from three separate viewpoints which are skillfully woven into a free flowing narrative that keeps the reader's interest throughout.

The characters are both interesting and flawed which endears them to you as the story progresses and ensures that a vested interest in their future is maintained. "

Psychoanalyze This! Please? by Rebecca Gomez Farrell 14/12/2022

For the Wings Unfurled Blog Tour, I stopped in at TKentWrites.com for a guest post! In "Psychoanalyze This! Please?” I share my dislike of the idea that all authors’ work are autobiographical in some form . . . while also wondering if maybe some of the symbols and images that fascinate me *do* have deeper meaning for my life and I just don’t know it! Read it here:

"Rebecca has a nice writing style, everything is painted clearly and beautifully. I enjoyed following Lady Serra throughout the story, and seeing her grow and learn. She is strong, brave, and kind. I liked the magical elements in the book. Also, I liked the themes of destiny, love, and will."

Wings Unfurled has been released for ONE WHOLE DAY!!! Hooray! This great review came in from a reader:

"Wings Unseen was one of my favorite books when it first came out, so I was excited to read the sequel. It does a great job in being a sequel and having improved on the first book. It had what I enjoyed from the world and did a good job in the magical elements. The characters worked so well in the environment and were well written. I enjoyed every part of the story and look forward to reading more from Rebecca Gomez Farrell."

And here's the backcover blurb:

The vicious claren that used to plague the reunited countries of Medua and Lansera are long gone. So what are the new dark patches appearing in Lady Serra's second sight?

Serra rushes to King Albrecht to report the danger, only to discover that he's ailing and Vesperi, Prince Janto's wife, has fled far to the north to grieve her disappeared daughter. Vesperi still wields the silver flame, possesses all the authority she's ever wanted, but nothing can heal the wound of a missing child. When the silver moon Esye begins to fade, a gnawing fear preys on her for the first time since she escaped her father's cold rule.

Ominous creatures once thought mythical are now rampaging through the countryside. Janto sends Serra to investigate. But without her friendship and Vesperi's love, he fears he cannot slay this challenge. He failed to find his own daughter, after all.

To save the Lanserim, the legendary bird with three heads must fly again. Will Janto, Vesperi, and Serra find the strength to raise it? Or will this menace, with the might to drain a moon, devour them first?

The best speculative fiction books with lyrical prose 06/12/2022

Over at Shepherd.com, which is a newish website to help shepherd readers toward their next favorite books, I compiled a list of books that impress me with their sometimes poetic, sometimes beautifully figurative, prose: The Best Speculative Fiction Books with Lyrical Prose.

https://shepherd.com/best-books/speculative-fiction-with-lyrical-prose

This list is heavily informed by my love of African American literature (this was my Modern Literature focus in college) and my willingness to follow gorgeous imagery anywhere, anytime. Feel free to ask me more about any of my choices; I’m happy to gush.

I also mention in the article that I’m preceded by THREE GENERATIONS(!) of poets on my mother’s side. Thanks to my mom, my grandfather William Parker, and my great-grandfather William Lee Popham for that legacy!

Wishing you some great new lyrical prose favorites! If you like my work, you may also want to check out the Shepherd list of Ominously Atmospheric Stories for Winter’s Night for suggestons, as Wings Unfurled does have a good share of its own haunting. Also take a gander at their new Magicians (Fantasy) shelf on their bookshelves.

Home | Story Hour 02/12/2022

I'm excited to be on The Story Hour next Wednesday at 7pm PT! This online reading series, co-hosted by Daniel Marcus & Laura Blackwell, features two writers reading at least one complete story each every week!

I'll be reading with Barbara A. Barnett, and while this *is* Wings Unfurled Release Week, I will not be reading from the book - see that "one complete story" detail above? It's part of what makes this series unique. So I'll be reading "Garbage," a humorous sci-fi tale about aliens who've made themselves quite at home in the USA. Follow on Facebook Live at the page linked above or visit http://storyhour2020.com for the Zoom link!

Home | Story Hour During these stir-crazy, cabin-fever, shut-in days and evenings, when we're trying to find new ways to entertain ourselves and each other, Story Hour goes back to basics, the oldest form of entertainment in history: people sitting around telling each other beautiful lies, spinning the fictive dream.

Wings Unfurled, Book 2 of the Wings Rising series, is now available for preorders! 🥳 Place your orders for my December 6 release at most online vendors or direct from my publisher (links below). And enjoy this teaser of two lines of prophechy appearing in the book....

When leaps the mighty cantalere
the dark brother drains his foes.

I'm excited to share this next chapter in the lives of Vesperi, Janto, and Serra.

Author Rebecca Gomez Farrell and the Gourmez on Facebook!

Welcome! As I like to say, I'm a writer of fictions and strong leisure time opinions, meaning I am a speculative fiction author and a food and drink blogger. My first novel, an epic fantasy titled Wings Unseen, came out in 2017. I have twenty and counting short stories, essays, and other works published thus far in various magazines, websites, and anthologies. TheGourmez.com, my food and drink blog, is a compendium of over 1,000 reviews of restaurants, wines, spirits, food trucks – you name it, I've tasted it.

Writing can be a solitary, discouraging career, so I love building communities with my fellow writers and bloggers. Thus, I organize a Bay Area chapter of Women Who Submit (Lit!), the East Bay Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Meetup group, and two Facebook discussion groups for all writers who identify as women and/or genderqueer. I will be or have appeared on panels or readings at Worldcon, the Wine Media Conference, Litquake, Fogcon, Parallel Lit, Wiscon, the Literary Speakeasy, and several more conventions and literary series. I have judged a handful of food and wine competitions as well. Lastly, I'm a proud associate member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.

Please feel free to contact me at my email, [email protected], or via social media here on Facebook or @theGourmez on Twitter and Instagram. I'm always happy to talk writer shop.
