The Collins Collective
Here you will find all things Motherhood, blogging, Wife life, mindset and Gut Health.
It’s that time of the year for those new years resolutions where everyone wants to lose some weight 😆
I’m excited to share that we are having a “ Lean Into It” weight loss challenge starting on 1st Jan.
$1000 up for grabs too!
Are you in?
Would love to see you!
Are you ready to try?
Ever weighed yourself constantly and felt discouraged?
I’ve essentially thrown out my scale and this is why ♥️
There is so much at play here and your weight can very multiple times a day!
Focusing on my gut health, nourishing my body and implementing weights is the key for me personally!
Don’t forget - your worth it not tied to that number on the scale.
Tag a friend to remind them✌🏻
Give things your all, don’t stop when the shine has worn off.
It’s true - we all have enthusiasm for new things.
Projects
Businesses
New Years resolutions!
But then after the initial motivation is gone, We quite often give up or move onto the next thing that will get us excited again.
We stop taking it seriously and stop carrying out the actions necessary to get us there or secure what we want.
The real benefits come when you stick with it.
When you persist.
When you work harder and do all the things required without throwing in the towel because it was difficult.
When you listen to those around you who are supporting you and have experience.
When you don’t give it your all and quit before you get to where you want to be, too often it’s:
“I tried but it wasn’t for me”.
“ It was just a bit of fun”
“ Its not worth it”
If you were trying for a baby would you say those things after one month of trying?
If you were going for a job that had a lengthy recruitment process would you say those things?
And more importantly if your child really wanted to do something and it took longer than they thought, or was harder than they thought - would you say the above to them?
Chances are the answer is NO
Most things worth having are on the other side of pain, hard work and struggle.
Which bit are you currently in?
What changes can you make?
I promise you it will be worth it
NEW MONTH NEW SPOTS ♥️

Are you being a kind woman?
Are you empowering others?
I freaking love this tee.
I have hidden my face because my hair was so greasy it would have given hair gel a run for it’s money, and I had twisties in my teeth 😂
But seriously, if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.
The world already has enough negative Nancy’s, enough women belittling one another and judging them, or tearing so called friends down.
You have no idea that your words may be the straw that breaks the camels back.
You have no idea how much work they may have been doing on their self worth, only to have it brought crashing back down by a careless comment.
Be a positive Polly instead 🤷🏼♀️
Your kind empowering words can change more that someone’s day.
It could change someone’s life...

We all know that exercise is good for us - it decreases our chance of heart disease, keeps our bones healthy and strong, and keeps our weight at a healthy level.
Immediate positive effects of purposeful movement include your body releasing natural pain-relieving and mood-enhancing chemicals (including dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin) after a session of purposeful movement.
A recent article in the Journal of Sport and Health Science describes the compelling link between physical activity and the body’s defense system, allowing for better immune regulation.
Much more than just exercise, purposeful movement has immediate effects:
• Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.
• Exercise causes change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the body's immune system cells that fight disease.
These antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they could detect illnesses earlier than they might have before.
• The brief rise in body temperature during and right after exercise may prevent bacteria from growing. This temperature rise may help the body fight infection better. (This is similar to what happens when you have a fever.)
• Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. Some stress increases the chance of illness. Lower stress hormones may protect against illness.
Studies have shown that people who follow a moderately energetic lifestyle, benefit most from starting (and sticking to) an exercise program. A moderate program can consist of:
• Bicycling with your children a few times a week
• Taking daily 20 to 30 minute walks
• Going to the gym every other day
• Playing golf regularly
If you already exercise, keep it up! You don’t have to do more exercise to be even healthier. In fact, too much exercise has been shown to be harmful long term. Exercise just the right amount to reduce systemic inflammation and increase immune function.
REST
But as important as it is to keep our bodies active, rest, both physical and emotional is also very important! And something that is often overlooked.
Rest is most often thought of as sleep – which is incredibly important. In fact, lack of sleep can negatively impact your immune system function. Studies show that people who don't get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus! Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick. Your body needs sleep to fight infectious diseases. Long-term lack of sleep also increases your risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart and cardiovascular disease.
Often people want to know the best amount of sleep needed to be healthy but contrary to popular belief, it’s not about the amount of time you spend in bed, but rather the quality of your sleep. Deep, restful sleep happens when your hormones are balanced, stress is decreased, and you fuel your body well. Besides good sleep hygiene, such as no screen time an hour before bed and drinking water, supplementing adds a lot of value to healthy sleep.
But let’s not forget intentional rest. Shutting down our bodies and our minds and just being still. We live in a society that values achievement, productivity and being busy so we often shame ourselves for taking intentional rest.
Rest is defined as minimal activity or function, and freedom from labor. But, some activities that feel passive aren’t actually restorative for your body or your mind.
“Sitting on the sofa and scrolling through social media is passive and though you may feel like you’re relaxing, you’re not rebooting in the way necessary to restore balance and truly recharge your battery,” says Jessica Love, a behavioral health expert. “Intentional rest and mindfulness is actually an action, a choice.”
Research has shown that with regular practice, intentional rest has far-reaching positive benefits for both our mental and physical health. Those benefits can include:
restoring your sense of calm,
reducing stress, anxiety and depression.
increasing productivity and creative thinking,
increasing resiliency and your ability to adapt and
helping to manage chronic pain, high blood pressure and heart disease
There is no right or wrong way to make time for intentional rest, but some ideas to get you started are going for a walk, reading a book, or trying a yoga pose.
What is your favourite way to move your body?

Who is ready for an incredible week?
I think it’s safe to say that we are more stressed in this post-2020 world that we were before.
For most of us, stress is just a part of life.
It can last for a few hours — like the time leading up to a final exam — or for years — like when you’re taking care of an ailing loved one.
Stress can be both good, helping us rise to the occasion – or it can be bad, overwhelming us. Whatever the case, if it’s chronic, it can take a toll on your immune system.
When we're stressed, the immune system's ability to fight off antigens is reduced. That is why we are more susceptible to infections.
The stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system (e.g. lowers the number of lymphocytes).
In short spurts, cortisol can boost your immunity by limiting inflammation.
But over time, your body can get used to having too much cortisol in your blood. And this opens the door for more inflammation, Dr. Calabrese, clinical immunologist says.
In addition, stress decreases the body’s lymphocytes — the white blood cells that help fight off infection. The lower your lymphocyte level, the more at risk you are for viruses, including the common cold and cold sores.
High stress levels also can cause depression and anxiety, again leading to higher levels of inflammation. In the long-term, sustained, high levels of inflammation point to an overworked, over-tired immune system that can’t properly protect you.
Stress reduction strategies not only give your mind a break, but they can also relieve the pressure on your immune system.
Two tactics that have been shown to be the most effective are meditation and yoga.
Practicing both for just 15 minutes a day reduces your cortisol levels and reduces inflammation. Research also shows it helps prevent the breakdown of your chromosomes that leads to cancer and premature aging.
It also lowers stress hormone levels and calms your nervous system to reduce inflammation.
Deep breathing helps boost your resistance to infection. Inverted poses in yoga help circulate fluid through your lymphatic system, filtering out toxins.

We may think stress is just a fact of life, but with the toll I’d can take on our body - minimising it can help so much.
Stress affects all systems of the body including the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive systems.
Stress can affect digestion and what nutrients the intestines absorb. Gas production related to nutrient absorption may increase.
The intestines have a tight barrier to protect the body from (most) food related bacteria.
Stress can make the intestinal barrier weaker and allow gut bacteria to enter the body.
Although most of these bacteria are easily taken care of by the immune system and do not make us sick, the constant low need for inflammatory action can lead to chronic mild symptoms.
Stress especially affects people with chronic bowel disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome.
This may be due to the gut nerves being more sensitive, changes in gut microbiota, changes in how quickly food moves through the gut, and/or changes in gut immune responses.
Do you ever find you seem to come down with the flu at times of high stress?
This week I’m going to touch on Stress ♥️
How it can greatly affect our overall health
How it can manifest in our bodies
Small things we can do to minimise stress in your life
And why this is important x
What are your stress levels currently like?
Researchers have identified a powerful connection between the gut and the brain.
Like the brain, the gut is full of nerves.
It contains the largest area of nerves outside the brain with the digestive tract and the brain sharing many of the same nerve connections.
Whether it’s a single nerve-wracking event or chronic worry and stress over time, stress can exact a physical toll on your digestive system.
When you are anxious, some of the hormones and chemicals released by your body enter your digestive tract, where they interfere with digestion.
They have a negative effect on your gut flora (microorganisms that live in the digestive tract and aid digestion) and decrease antibody production.
The resulting chemical imbalance can cause a number of gastrointestinal conditions.
Common stress-related gut symptoms and conditions include:
Indigestion
Stomach cramps
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Loss of appetite
Unnatural hunger
Nausea
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Do you suffer from any of these?

Did you know there is a decisive link between the gut and the brain?
Both anxiety and depression, along with other mood and neuropsychiatric disorders, such as eating disorders, bipolar disorder or sleep disorders, result from a complex relationship of factors. These may include a combination of nutritional, physical, environmental, social, emotional, and spiritual factors that impact your genetic tendencies and brain chemistry.
There is growing evidence showing that our beneficial gut bacteria support positive mood and emotional well-being. Interestingly, differences in the gut microbiome exist between people with anxiety and depression and those without.
This means that certain species are present in those with healthy mental and emotional states that are not found in individuals suffering from poor mental health.
Altering the gut microbiome with probiotics can decrease feelings of anxiety and positively affect emotional processing.

Call it lazy, call it what you want, but I NEVER had a skincare routine.
As you all know I was a soap and hot water girl.
I looked into skincare but it was always incredibly expensive or a 27 step routine that included needing to have Enya playing in the background for it to work 🤷🏼♀️
But hello quick, easy morning routine!
This is my cleanser and morning serum.
It’s super easy and inexpensive which is surprising when you look at the consciously clean, unparalleled ingredients packed in.
My cleanser WEEDS out environmental pollutants, dirt, oil and makeup that can clog my pores.

And my Multi Action Collagen FEEDS my skin by supporting, boosting and maintaining Collagen Production 💃🏼
It really helps me balance my skin microbiome and prevention is much easier than repair down the track!

“ Worry is like a rocking chair, it’s fun to do but it’s not getting you anywhere. “
It’s so true!
There are so many times I have let worry stop me from doing things.
Stop me from speaking up
Stop me from backing myself
And stop me from believing in myself
But did it help me in any way AT ALL?
Nope.
April 1 I drew a line in the stand and cared more about what I thought of myself than what others thought.
And gosh it feel so good!

🦠 Gut Health + Mental Health 🧠
If you’ve ever “gone with your gut” to make a decision or felt “butterflies in your stomach” when nervous, you are getting signals from an unexpected source: your second brain!
Hidden in the walls of the digestive system, this “brain in your gut” that is changing the understanding of the links between digestion, mood, health and even the way you think.
Serotonin is the little hormone that makes us feel happy. It is estimated that 90% of the body's serotonin is made, not in the brain, but in the digestive tract!
The chemicals used by our neurons to communicate and regulate mood, namely dopamine, serotonin, and GABA, are all secreted by gut bacteria.
They enter the bloodstream and seep through the blood brain barrier, ultimately altering the brain and, in turn, mood and behaviour!
Poor gut health can lead to suppressed levels for these mood regulating hormones...and that means bad news for our mental health.
It has been proven over and over, if you want to be healthy + HAPPY, you have to focus on the gut!
