THE NGO OF MY DREAM: THE PLAN, THE IDEA, AND THE THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD WHEN I ENVISION AYIBASUD.

I think this is a good moment for me to try to explain to people of Benin Republic and our new members my vision of AYIBASUD. What is it that I am trying to achieve? Why am I doing this? Why did I gather people together under this group and what are we trying to achieve?

It is important to answer these questions and explain things to those who are not sure. AYIBASUD is growing quite fast. It is bringing people of diverse backgrounds together. It is quite easy to misunderstand what we stand for. This misunderstanding has given rise to fears in some quarters, even within government, as to what Chuka Udegbuna is up to. As a result of this growing fears, I have been under a close observation by certain agencies. That is not a bad thing. It is the standard behavior of every government to watch certain people and know what they are up to. Later here, I shall talk briefly about governments' interest in certain people, and why me.

My views and aspirations of AYIBASUD should not be so hard to explain. About 22 years ago, after completing my basic secondary education in Nigeria and later engaging in petty trading like most ibo boys from anambra state of Nigeria, I left Nigeria for England. Then, Nigeria was the only country I knew. I graduated among the best students in my school and I held the post of a Labour prefect. I traded at idumota and balogun market briefly. So, I had every reason to think I was among the lucky youths of the country of Nigeria, despite my modest beginning.

My role in history or what I expected my role to become in history was dramatically enhanced that afternoon at the great Nigerian house balogun Lagos, when I came accross a cousin recently deported from Germany who sponsored my movement to UK. I was making my daily delivery of goods seated with my clients when my cousin came looking for me telling me he was deported. I was already in the middle of completing a delivery to a Congolese client when my cousin came. He started with something like: "I would like to get back to europe by all means but I don't know how to get the visas. I told him Nigerian passport was visa free to Indonesia and all he needed was to buy an air France ticket to Indonesia or British airways ticket but be rest assured each airline you choose the transit visa will be arranged by the travel agency you do not even need to present at the embassy and I can go with you if you are not sure ……".

Even though I had absolutely no money to pay for my ticket, I knew that moment, that God wanted me to be different and to do something for my people, the people. Immediately after explaining to my cousin and he asked how much it would cost both of us and I calculated , everything changed - the delivery I was making became a forgotten issue. The money I was making then suddenly became peanuts, my surroundings changed. I felt a mental transformation from being a petty trader to becoming europe based is great history, as far as I saw my future.

Right there and then, I asked myself: why again would my cousin choose me out of the numerous cousins we had? It occurred to me why. It must be because of what I wrote in my letter to him when he initially travelled before his deportation. I had told my cousin in that letter about the circumstances of my birth and how I struggled through those circumstances. I told him how I was born in a lovely family but was separated from my father briefly due to divorce of my both parents , how I was not able to continue my university education because my mother could not afford the fees anymore and also feed me with my siblings numbering four , two boys and two girls .I told him how my dad died without leaving much for us to sustain with because his other wife took over all his properties and my mother was not aware of due to the separation. I told him how I witnessed mass poverty and how determined I was to change all that. I think my cousin choose me because he read my letter that if given the benefit of traveling to europe or to further my education, I would try to change those human conditions that I identified in my letter. That was 20 years ago or thereabout.

I had to share a bit of that background to let you know how long it has been in me to try to do something to change our society and to protect those who did not have the same opportunities and privileges that I had, and who now look up to me for answers to the problems we face in our societies.

My years in Europe and in west African countries, totaling over two decades, prepared me to do something for people. Indeed, when it appeared that I had gotten too comfortable in europe and almost about to forget the pledge I made, very dramatic personal events forced me back to africa, where it all began. Yes, my return to Nigeria at this level of involvement might not have occurred if the Nigerian British citizen lady I came back with had not reneged and denied me of a court marriage so I can process my British citizenship in year 2000. By now, I would still have been coming to Nigeria once in two years. But now, I spend 70% of my time in Nigeria. You can liken my return to Nigeria to Jonah's journey to Nineveh. Upon my return from UK I explored other west African countries with brief visits to UAE in between. Finally I settled in Benin Republic after some years in Republic of Togo. I obtained my BSC in telecommunications and networking a computer engineering course from the Universite Africain pour Technologie et de Management(UATM) here in cotonou Benin Republic. When destiny wants you to do something, it knows how to get you to the spot where you should be and at the right time.

Our Nigerian society and Africa as a whole has suffered through contemporary history. Our people have been denied most attributes of decent life. Young Nigerians finish school but cannot get a decent job. When asked why it is the usual my application was submitted but rejected. I do not have a godfather to assist me get a job. Instead the ones with lesser grade get the jobs because their father or uncles and aunts are well placed.

Amidst these crisis and human failings, we need to effect change. We need to do something. Time has come for me to start doing something to change things. That is what AYIBASUD is about.

AYIBASUD requires that many people should come together to seek to change for the better the lots of the majority. It is not enough that we recognize the problems. It is not enough that we complain about the problems. We must go further to do something about changing the situation we find ourselves in.

Some who witness instances of disappointment from the government of the day have wondered if there would ever be a help to the hopeless situation. Yes there is and we can do it by registering with a great turn out and taxing our selves for the purpose of financing our personal projects. The purpose of the organization is that it shall be self sustainability directed. We shall have a monthly contribution from members to finance our projects monthly which shall be on first come first serve basis. purpose of the group will support any leader who truly cares about Nigerians and African youth and I will oppose any leader who oppresses Nigerians and African youth irrespective of his ethnicity or religion.

Returning to government's probable interest in my activities, it will be more of a surprise to me if the Nigerian government should be unaware or disinterested in me and my activities. I would rather posit that any government in which I were to become so vocal and so critical would be interested in keeping a tab on me. This is more so where I have started mobilizing Nigerians for change through AYIBASUD. So, I am watched and I know I am watched. But I am not bothered in the least.

AYIBASUD is aiming to provide the critical momentum for massive social change in this country. We are looking to mobilize extensively. That requires preparing the people, training them, equipping them with that critical mindedness which they need to carry out their heart desires by having their projects financed with zero interest rate once they are members. We shall seek to fill the gaps where government fails. We shall seek to give access to justice to those jobless. We shall seek to press for economic opportunities for those marginalized. We shall seek to empower the powerless and the disempowered. We shall seek to protect the vulnerable among us. We shall demand for a more humane society and a more just and equitable country. It shall be for the benefit of all, and not for the benefit of the same old few.

For those of you who have decided to join AYIBASUD bear in mind that our journey is just about to begin and the road ahead is long, but best destination is assured. You must join us in this process of mobilization by bringing your friends and family members to join AYIBASUD today.

Thank you.

Chuka Udegbuna
