Harriet Tubman Tours of Cambridge, Maryland, posted an uncirculated 1908 photo of its namesake on Facebook last week. Alex Green, the owner of the tour group, told The Citizen that the photo was taken by an acquaintance of Sarah Bradford, who published the first biographies of Tubman. At the time of the photo, Tubman was about 85 years old, and she would pass away in 1913.

The world knew him as "Blind Tom" Wiggins, a musical prodigy, one of the best-known American performing pianists of the 19th century.
Born in Harris County, Georgia, in 1849, to enslaved parents, because Tom was blind, he couldn't do the same work as others enslaved. Finding an interest and much talent in playing the piano at a young age, he composed his first tune by age of five. And he was known to play all day. As one observer said about Tom - "I don't exaggerate when I say that he made the piano go from twelve hours out of twenty-four."
Tom performed worldwide, including at the U.S. White House, where it is believed he was the first African-American to perform, doing so when he was just eleven years old.

This Black-owned family-style restaurant in Brewton, Alabama captures national attention with their extraordinary concept - serving meals with no prices. With no cash registers in sight, they create a safe haven where everyone is welcomed and nourished, regardless of their ability to pay. A powerful display of compassion and unity. "

Always Learning! Always Sacrificing!
Finding a building to use as a schoolhouse was often a challenge since few local whites were willing to sell or rent property to African Americans to use as schools. For many communities, including Sharpsburg, the solution was to use African American churches. African American congregations owned these buildings and, unlike most white landowners, were usually willing to support the schools. Ezra Johnson and John J. Carter held classes in Tolsonโs Chapel, a church constructed by black Methodists in Sharpsburg in 1866. To outfit the building for use as a school, local residents applied liquid slate to the side walls of the church to create chalkboards.
Despite the sacrifices required to send children to school, African American children filled schoolhouses in the Southern and border states during Reconstruction. In 1868 and 1869, at least twenty-five students attended school in Tolsonโs Chapel. This number includes twelve children who had been born into slavery. Adults sought education as well. Ezra Johnson held night classes, and in the fall of 1869, local resident Samuel Ferguson reported that twenty-six men were ready to attend school during the winter when there was less work available.
