Fans of duo Contour

To mark the birthday of our late friend Donald Bousted on 21st November, we, duo Contour, are releasing three movements of 19.5, recorded live to video, which were originally one online performance made as part of the 'Mikrotöne: Small is Beautiful' Symposium hosted by the Ekmelic Society in 2021.

The first piece in my SOUNDSCAPE project with Gilbert Isbin, where I improvise on the 19-div trumpet. There is one other microtonal trumpet one, where a 24-div trumpet is used.

In Your Dreams (2004) for 19- and 24-division trumpets; percussion 'kit' comprising wooden board, minidisc case (with disc enclosed), cough sweet tin (with chain inside) and piccolo wood block; DVD (with PA sound track) and 2 further CDs which are transmitted through 2 pairs of NXT transducers. We are happy to announce that our Tribute to Donald (Bousted) will be live from tomorrow (Friday) at 4pm GMT+2.

We will premier a piece by Martin Bright, someone Don played in Rock bands with as a youth, and also was a student with at FE and Music Colleges. They were both members of 'Four Composers'.

Donald Bousted's 19.5 for 19-division Trumpet and malletKAT has been described as a tour de force in 19-divisions-of-the-octave tuning. I think we performed this work, 'In your dreams' by Donald Bousted, many times with video in the UK, USA and Germany. The only time (that I can recall) we did it with the live art performance, was at the Tate Britain Gallery in London, in 2010 as part of the Late@Tate, 'Microtonal' curated by Microtonal Projects.

It's been postponed, twice, but now we are finally playing the 20 Year (plus 2!) anniversary of our first concert in Freiburg: it was in August 2000, at the Alte Wiehre Bahnhof, 2.5 years before I moved to Freiburg.

We are playing new old pieces (Susato, Viviani, Haydn, Bozza) and old new pieces (Parsons, Jürg Frey), plus a bit of improvisation. Lee's got a lot of mallet playing and I will have 6 different trumpets!

Donald Bousted: 19.5 19.5 (Nineteen Point Five) is an instrumental work for 19-div trumpet and malletKAT written primarily in 19-div tuning (2012-14, rev 2018- 19).

Microtonal Projects have re-released the CD of Donald Bousted's Album: the end of the beginning. It is a tribute to the composer who provided us with so much repertoire: his cycle for us '19.5' was released only a half year ago on all good digital platforms. We are featured in Verses 1 & 2.
