It is with great sadness that we have learned of the sudden and unexpected passing of Paul Byrne, co-founder of BatPak, a pioneers of softball in Ireland and brother of Niall Byrne.

A lot of you will know that along with Stephen Metzler, Paul founded the team in 1987 under the name of Datalex, a corporate league team. They played out of Herbert Park and started with a few friendlies. In 1988 they would be playing against the American Embassy, Dodder, Oddsox, Aer Lingus Flyers and UCD prior to a league being formed in 1989. The team entered the league and Batpak was born.

When the Leinster Softball Association was formed, Paul was the first chairperson and later became one of the umpire chiefs in Ireland. Paul moved to the US and continued to umpire to a high standard. He has been back in Ireland for a number of years and was living in Clontarf with his wife and three boys.

Our thoughts are with his wife and sons, Niall and Carol, who is still active in the club.

With a free league night this week a BatPak crew travelled to Jersey over the weekend to get in some good game time. Delighted to say the team went undefeated throughout the tournament and brought home the trophy 🏆 . There was some great fielding and batting throughout the weekend and a big thanks to Jersey Softball for organising a great competition and to “manager Dave” who did a great job with us over the weekend. Congratulations to all who travelled, especially our guest appearances, a fun night was had celebrating with the Jersey teams after the tourney.

We look forward to the next league game against Kegs in St Anne’s park - shame it isn’t in Wanders as it would have been nice hearing Bruce Springsteen playing in the background at the RDS 😂

What a fantastic way to kick off the new season! 4 Prem teams took the field at Castleknock College this evening. The games were Castleknock Softball v Kegs Softball Club and Batpak Softball Club vs Hippetys Softball Club Dublin. Followed by a few scoops at Myos. Cheers to the new season! 🥳🍻🥎
