Hey music lovers! Are you ready to embark on a captivating journey through the diverse world of music? Look no further! We are thrilled to invite you to an exciting new podcast experience: The Counterparts Show with George and John. Strap yourselves in as we delve into the depths of melodies, rhythms, and stories that have shaped the musical landscape.

This week's episode: Music Theory. Needed or overrated.

While a solid understanding of music theory can undoubtedly enhance a musician's skill set and versatility, it is not an absolute requirement for success in the music industry. Many successful musicians throughout history have achieved remarkable careers without formal music theory training. These individuals often rely on their innate musical intuition, creativity, and personal expression to connect with audiences on a deep emotional level. They may develop their unique sound through experimentation, improvisation, and a keen ear for melody and rhythm. Moreover, the music industry embraces a diverse range of genres, styles, and approaches, and success can stem from factors such as charisma, stage presence, marketing strategies, and networking abilities. Ultimately, while music theory can be a valuable tool, it is not the sole determinant of an artist's success.

Kenny has a new podcast: https://kennyaronoff.com/legendary-drummer-launches-new-podcast/

Kenny Aronoff is one of the most influential and in-demand drummers and percussionists in the world. He has entertained millions of people with his drumming, has played on thousands of records, and has been the “go-to” drummer for the biggest stars in music while providing the beat of American culture over four decades! https://kennyaronoff.com/

Kenny grew up in a big country farmhouse in a small town of 3,000 people in the hills of western Massachusetts. He was a self-taught drummer who at the young age of 16 decided to learn how to play timpani, mallets, and legit snare drum. He studied and played with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, including world-renowned timpanist Vic Firth. He went on to study for one year at the university of Massachusetts and four years at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, where among other honors, he was awarded the school’s prestigious performer’s certificate. During summer breaks, when he wasn’t studying timpani with Vic Firth, he played in symphony orchestras at the Aspen Music Festival (run by the Juilliard School of Music) and the Tanglewood Music Festival (run by the Boston Symphony Orchestra). After graduating, Kenny was offered timpani positions in several symphony orchestras, but instead said “no” because he still wanted to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band and be part of a team of musicians that recorded music and toured the world, just like The Beatles did. Kenny spent one year studying drum set with Alan Dawson in Boston and Gary Chester in New York before moving back to Bloomington to start his own band, “Streamwinner“.

Steve Smith's drumming, while decidedly modern, can best be described as a style that embodies the history of U.S. music. Steve is active as a band leader (Steve Smith and Vital Information) as a featured sideman (Mike Stern Group, Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion, Steps Ahead, Hiromi-The Trio Project) and as an educator/clinician.

Steve Smith grew up in the Boston area and started playing drums at the age of nine in 1963. He studied music at the Berklee College of Music from 1972 to 1976 with Alan Dawson and Gary Chaffee as his private instructors. Over the past 45 years he has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz and rock - appearing on recordings that have sold over 100 million copies worldwide - including Journey, Bryan Adams, Mariah Carey, Zucchero and Jean-Luc Ponty. Other notable jazz artists Smith has played with include Zakir Hussain, Buddy DeFranco, Benny Golson, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Bill Evans and Hiromi.

Smith produced and played on a series of sixteen jazz albums for the Tone Center label featuring players such as Frank Gambale, Stu Hamm, Oteil Burbridge, Larry Coryell, Jerry Goodman, Howard Levy, Steve Marcus, Scott Henderson and Victor Wooten. His release The Best Of Steve Smith – The Tone Center Collection is a sample of some of his favorite tracks from those collaborations.

Smith is currently touring with his own all-star band Vital Information featuring Manuel Valera (keyboards) and Janek Gwizdala (bass). The lastest Vital Information release is titled Heart Of The City. Vital Information is approaching its 40th Anniversary, as the first Vital Information album was released in 1983. Wounded Bird Records is starting the celebration with the 2022 release of The Complete Columbia Recordings, a four CD set of the first four Vital Information albums. From 2016-2019 Steve Smith toured with the iconic rock band Journey, the group in which he recorded nine albums with massive hits. In 2017 Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Monday! Jan 3rd 2022! Join us for our first guest of 2022!

Jon Statham was raised on music.

His father worked at country music station WQIX, interviewing country music stars such as Loretta Lynn and Tanya Tucker. One time, during a live music broadcast, he was visited by members of Hank Williams band, who stopped in to play after hearing his broadcast.

Jon Statham - fiddleOne knew when they entered the Statham home, that this family treasured music. Whether it was dad playing guitar and singing country and folk songs from the 30’s and 40’s, to mom and the kids assigning vocal parts to an Irish ballad for church. There always seemed to be music flowing through the house.

Jon has honed his singing, guitar playing, and songwriting into a style that honors the classics, as well as offering a new voice that forwards the tradition of great rock, pop, and country music.

He had the pleasure of working with producer J.J. Blair on the soundtrack for the Warner Brothers DVD film The Utopian Society. J.J. is known for his work on the Rod Stewart album “The Great American Songbook III” and for his work with the late June Carter Cash. Jon arranged and sang backup vocals for some of the various artists that are on the soundtrack.

He has since played and produced thousands of recordings for artists all over the world.

Jon has lived and played music in New York, Nashville and Los Angeles and fills his days doing a lot of vocal studio work and writing songs.
