Mark Dobies

It Started with a Punch to the Head

Mark was 13 years old and had been playing guitar for two years. At an Against Me! concert, he eagerly jumped into the mosh pit, where he was almost immediately punched in the face. He doesn't tell many people this, but he kind of liked it.

He began playing festivals and colleges all around Florida, where he won WAPE 95.1's "Battle of the Bands" and worked with Thomas Amason (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus) and David Johnson (Grammy-nominated songwriter). He has shared the stage with Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters), Ed King (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Mike Peters (The Alarm), and many others.

His distortion-soaked record, ‘A Smart and Happy Child’, was recorded at Bryan Adam's Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, B.C. The liquidity tones were achieved by recording on the world famous Neve board once used by George Martin of The Beatles. Inspired by the ethereal mountains and seascapes while hiking in Los Angeles, he found the reverb on a synth pad too irresistible to ignore. He has recently taken a turn towards more pop/wavy tones, incorporating more drum loops and electronic samples to his latest projects while never neglecting his rock roots. The Nashville Songwriters Association has called Mark "One to Watch."
