CPCSC STAFF SPOTLIGHT

**Dana Camp: Energizing Movement in Education!**

Dana Camp is not your typical gym teacher. As the enthusiastic physical education instructor at Whiteland Elementary, she believes in the power of movement to engage children. "I wouldn’t ask my students to do something I won’t do myself," she insists, emphasizing her commitment to keeping everyone active during her classes. "I require that they keep moving!"

Dana's educational journey began with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University, followed by a Master’s in Education from Austin Peay State University. Since 2011, she has dedicated her skills to the students at WES, but her extensive background in education spans 34 years. Something many don’t know about her is that before diving into physical education, Dana was a classroom teacher for 15 years in various states, including Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, and California. Today, she inspires approximately 380 K-5 students, promoting physical fitness in a fun and engaging environment.

Her classes are filled with energy, from lively warm-ups set to pop music to the thrilling challenge of the climbing wall. Dana cherishes the unique aspect of her job—getting paid to play! “The best part about being a teacher is witnessing the joy in children—their laughter, smiles, and the way they engage both their minds and bodies in physical activity. I get to do all the fun stuff, and that brings me joy.”

Despite her impressive career, Dana has no thoughts of retirement on the horizon. However, she looks forward to one day spending more time with her three grandchildren in San Diego. In addition to her professional life, Dana proudly raised three children—two daughters and a son—who have undoubtedly contributed to her joyful perspective on life.

One significant challenge she faces as a PE instructor is encouraging those students who are hesitant about physical activity. "I need to strike a balance between motivating those who are enthusiastic and engaging those who are more reluctant." To address this, she utilizes quick drills and diverse stations, ensuring that every student can participate, irrespective of their athletic abilities. Many of her students who participate in WES’s running club, which she oversees, go on to run track and or cross country in middle and high school. “Not only does she make an incredible impact in the gymnasium each day, she is heavily involved in our PTO, a trusted colleague, and someone who can always be counted on to be professional in all interactions”, stated WES Principal, Bethany Guilfoy. “Coach Camp makes a huge impact on our entire school community! We are so lucky that she is a Warrior and a part of our team at WES!”

Dana lives in Columbus and grew up in Edinburgh, where she passionately participated in every sport available. She describes her life as an open book and embraces an active lifestyle, running half marathons and tackling mud races alongside her fiancé.

Join us in congratulating Dana Camp on being our CPCSC Staff Spotlight—her dedication to moving bodies and minds is truly inspiring!
