Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam, (Tamil: உதய குமார் தருமலிங்கம் utaya kumār tarumaliṅkam), from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is the designer of Indian Rupee Symbol. He has done his Bachelor’s in Architecture from School of Architecture & Planning, Anna University and Master’s in Design from Industrial Design Center, IIT Bombay. Master’s programme inspired him to do a research on regional typography and to pursue
doctorate in Design at IDC, IIT Bombay. At present he is an assistant professor in department of Design at IIT Guwahati. Apart from academics he is a sports enthusiast represented institute in inter IIT sports meet and organised intra sports events. He is a big nature lover and has planted 16 different species of trees in IIT campus. He is amongst the very few persons in the history of IIT Bombay to receive two Institute citations in a single year when he received the Organization Citation and the Sports Citation in 2009. He was awarded "Person of the Year" in 2007 for excellence in organization in IIT Bombay. His design was selected from the five short listed designs among thousands of entries. He donated the entire prize money to Prajwala, an anti trafficking non-profit organization working for women based in Hyderabad. A very down to earth, unassuming genuine and warm person - and probably the only person next to Mahatma Gandhi to be so closely associated with the Indian currency.
