Als je even een paar minuten hebt om deze hele post te lezen ...... dan haal je misschien ook de onderste van alle loftuitingen nog op het album Spark & Flame van Jim Keller, de man met zoveel gruis in zijn grote-stads-americana dat hij (niet altijd terechte) vergelijkingen aangemeten krijgt met Lou Reed, John Hiatt, Tom Waits, John Prine en andere grootheden. Zijn optredens In New York worden (net zoals zijn optredens hier in 2021) als indrukwekkend ervaren en dat zal tijdens zijn tournee in september niet anders zijn als hij op het podium bijgestaan zal worden door zijn musical director Adam Minkoff met Jan van Bijnen, Roel Spanjers en Rowin Tettero als gastmuzikanten.

Zijn songs en muziek hebben wel soms raakvlakken met een bluesiere Lou Reed, een beetje van Tom Petty en wat van de gruizige duisternis van Tom Waits gelardeerd met Los Lobos “Kiko” achtige sfeertjes. Spark & Flame is een zeer fijne nieuwe schijf van de intrigerende man met zijn donkerbruine stem.

Waar Kellers vierde wapenfeit nog klonk als de moerasfolk van Tom Waits meets J.J. Cale doet de opvolger Spark & Flame enigzins denken aan het folkrock werk van John Hiatt. En daar bedoel ik niets negatiefs mee, want de samen met Byron Isaacs bovenmodale composities nestelen zich vrij rap in je hoofd. En dan doe je toch iets goed.
