“You are growing into consciousness, and my wish for you is that you feel no need to constrict yourself to make other people comfortable.” -Ta-Nehisi Coates
I See You, but I’m Not Seeing You, is a self-portrait performance piece. This project aims to shed light on the complexities of individual identity and the importance of embracing diverse perspectives.
The project is divided into three parts: a performance piece to camera, a performance film, and a meditative sound piece.
I See You, but I’m Not Seeing You, combines my performance and photography background with my interest in architecture and spaces — an interest that I explored in my earlier projects, Masculinity and I Am and Noise.
Through this project, I hope that viewers will open themselves to a deeper understanding of others and their diverse creative expressions.
I have been nominated by the fantastic artist to post 10 images over 10 consecutive days (without comment) and to invite another artist to participate each day - in support of artistic labour to promote and support artist peers and subvert meta algorithms 🧡 although I will not be posting every day. Today is day 1 and I want to invite whose work and approach to her practice I admire. I find her artwork beautiful and contemplative.
Today I attended a stimulating ' Time in Nature" course rum by The Art & Scinece MA Dept at Central St Martins for the University of Arts teaching staff. It served as a reminder of how much nature can inspire creativity and how we, as artists, can work with it. Lately, I have incorporated more meditation in my practice and working with spirit. This course has further clarified how I want to develop my practice. It was also great to be amongst liked people. The last image is the last activity we carried out in pairs, followed by a group of four, to collaborate on a piece of work created from objects we gathered on a 10m walk.
