Postpartum care in America is presented as fragmented support services with high costs, leaving most mothers and parents to face this in isolation. During a recent brunch, Sara Hutchins, a mother to a 2-month-old and a 3-year-old, shared her experience about a new postpartum care community she joined in Metro Detroit, known as Fourth Tri Sanctuary. “This place is for mothers to come where they are, come without a shower, take it there. You sit down to breastfeed and someone will approach and ask, ‘What do you need?’ I thought that, as a second time mom, I don’t deserve this because this is a place for first-time moms. It took me a long time to come and explore it — I have found peace when I’m there and I feel at ease. When I come home, I’m a better mom, a better wife, and I’m more patient.”⁠

Fourth Tri Sanctuary offers up to 18 weeks of support for mothers and their babies from certified postpartum doulas and health professionals in an environment designed for healing, education and bonding, and addresses the critical and often overlooked “fourth trimester” of motherhood. Parents whose babies are beyond 18+ months can also receive mom-only support through their weekly programming and amenities.⁠

“This first image also was a finalist in print competition under the category “real life”. I wanted to give these images their own post because they mean a lot to me. I had a really hard time deciding which one I wanted to submit so I’m going to share what I see in both of them.
Imagine one- Back light creating a special glow over momma, connection holding her baby and trying to get him to latch with a ni**le shield. A haaka attached the other breast to catch her let down, on the couch still in postpartum underwear.
Imagine 2- This one I actually FEEL a bit more. You’re only days PP, living on the couch in just your postpartum underwear. Your baby is crying because they want to nurse but it’s not yet as easy as just putting them to the breast. There are steps to take, while they lay there crying. You take out your pads, you see baby wipes, a big cup of water, you try and fold and attach your haaka, then have to place your ni**le shield hoping it will help make latching easier. For me this image shows more of a postpartum story.
Both of these capture what life is like days after having a baby. It is a raw, intimate and beautiful time. You may be laying on your couch but you are not resting. You are healing and learning and connecting with your baby. There is no other time like this and I’m honored to capture these moments.”

“Sharing my 🍈🍈 breastfeeding journey because everyone’s looks completely different.

Before I became a mother, I didn’t understand how challenging it could be, so I think spreading awareness is really important 🙏🏽

Here’s some photos of my twin BF story so far.. 👶🏼👶🏽

1. At 37 weeks pregnant, I hand expressed and froze vials of ‘liquid gold’ (colostrum) ✨ I was so proud because I worked really hard to express those few ml.

2. We’re so glad we brought colostrum to the hospital as they were immediately fed to our girls in the OR room 🍼 Most went to baby S as she was smaller at exactly 5lbs.

3. After surgery we had our ‘golden hour’ with the newborns 💕 The amazing lactation consultants at helped position my first tandem feed.. It felt incredible!

4. Feeding S on the hospital glider while X slept. This is her signature ‘monkey face plant 🐒’ pose that the nurses found hilarious.

5. Absolutely exhausted and in horrible pain after the meds wore off 😩 I fell asleep while feeding X in bed. We had also started formula feeding because their glucose levels were low.

6. Tandem feeding at home proved much more difficult. Babies were struggling to latch on, they would constantly cry or fall asleep at the b**b and it would take hours to eat properly. It was mentally draining and taking a toll on me while healing from a C-section 😥🤕 The girls have a combined 20 feedings a day.. so you can imagine how stressful it was!

7. I bought hand-free pumps and was able to express milk without being confined to a chair 🙌🏽😍This helped sooo much with making me feel more like myself!

8. Now I only breastfeed when I feel like it. My goal is to nurse both once a day for bonding, pump every few hours and feed half formula and half BM (unless I’m able to produce more) but I won’t stress if it doesn’t go as planned 🥰 A happy mom is more important!”

“ Life with the new baby was not just about all pink and blue,
1. There were days when I cried myself to sleep thinking about how I was not able to spend more time with Ahan.
2. There were days I begged my baby to stop feeding because my breast felt sore after cluster feeds.
3. There were days when I asked God why I had gone for another baby.
4. There were days I hated my husband because he did not have breasts to feed the baby.
5. There were days I didn’t brush my hair, for three days straight.
6. There were days I didn’t feel any love for my baby.
7. There were days I was beyond exhausted that I felt I was done.
8. There were days when I struggled to find time to use the restroom.
9. There were days when taking a good proper hair wash required so much planning! Phew!
10. There were days when my biggest achievement of the day was that the baby slept 3 hours straight in the afternoon and I would nap.
11. There were days in which I felt, “What was I doing the whole day other than taking care of the baby?” “Where was my life?”
12. There were days when I thought, “Would I ever get my old self back?”
13. There were days I begged God to let me finish the meal before the baby woke up.
14. There were days when my hormones took over me and I was so cranky!
15. There were days I felt like yelling at the baby and then I cried, thinking about how bad a mother I was.
16. There were days people made me feel I was not good enough for the baby.
The list went on and on... Remember, you are not alone! Hugs, mommy!”

“Most mums don’t need you to come over and hold baby for 2 hours.

Maybe long enough to have a shower or a nap.

But looking after baby, cuddles, soothing and feeding, they are already great at that (even if they don’t see it).

The best postpartum support you can give is to do all the bits they would be doing if they weren’t spending all their time with their new baby.

Walk the dog, play with other kids, do chores or bring food! “

“liquid gold 💛 seeing some people say that you shouldn’t worry about collecting colostrum in those last few weeks of pregnancy, because why add one more thing to your plate to stress about? but it was a life saver for us!

my son was born with a severe tongue and lip tie that needed to be corrected. he was having a hard time latching and when he did latch, it wasn’t very productive. i collected 6 of these vials of colostrum before he arrived and used all of them within the first two weeks of his life. they were a blessing before his correction procedure and were so helpful to have on hand when he was healing. i attribute some of the success i’ve had with breastfeeding to those vials 💛

just sharing my story on why it can be beneficial to collect - it was definitely a labor of love, but one i’m glad i looked into before delivery.

“ I truly believe that when you’re vigilant, Mastitis can almost always be prevented. I recommend you examine your breasts in the mirror daily. Sometimes the red areas can be seen before they’re even felt. I didn’t feel pain at first but I did get a glimpse of a red area. I knew I needed to take action before it progressed.

Some signs of a clog are: red area, warm area, firm area that doesn’t soften after a feed, persistent tender spot, can feel like a bruise, the area can feel painful or throbbing during feeding, body aches, chills, fever.

Once you are suspecting a clog, take action immediately. Mine personally took almost a week to completely clear, however I never experienced fever or other symptoms, just red, warm, firm and painful area. Some of the methods I used to help it clear:
lots of warm compress, plenty of hot showers and I would use a little soap on my finger tips to massage the area. Out of desperation you may want to massage hard, but be careful not to, because this increases the swelling, pain, redness etc.. instead utilize gentle massage with some oil, encouraging the clot out but not forcing it. Epsom salt baths. Initiating majority of the feeds on the affected breast. There is also a haakaa hack, where you use warm water and epsom salt and apply it to the affected breast to help draw out the clog. Be careful not to burn your ni**le with hot water. When I couldn’t take a bath I would fill a large container with warm water and Epsom salt and submerge breast into it. Dangle nursing, laying the baby on the bed, get on all fours over the baby, literally allowing the breast to dangle into their mouth. At the end, what I believe had the greatest effect in helping to resolve my clog was supplementing Sunflower Lecithin. I personally never saw the clog, some women see it, some don’t, but all my symptoms subsided about a day after taking the supplement. Having experienced it for the first time with my third baby, I felt grateful despite the pain, it helped me relate more to my clients. I also encourage moms to consider why it happened to avoid it reoccurring. I hope this was helpful!”
