Back in 1993, I actually had made a big home-made Star Trek Strategy gaming system from these Micromachines. I saw them way back then and thought, "These would be perfect for a table-top game!". I then spent time, painting Star Trek space scenes on large plywood pieces and created smaller scenes, that I called "battle boards" and even made ship status boards out of cardboard that showed how much your ship was damaged. I recorded the Star Trek The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine episodes on VHS, then I spent hours splicing them together to form different alternative plots, so that once play had started, I could fast forward or reverse on VHS (this was all before modern computer editing) to show a clip from the TV series which would coordinate with gameplay. I was doing this before things like Trivial Pursuit with the DVDs. I would also play Star Trek music during our gameplay and we all had fun drinking Romulan Ale (blue-dyed 7-Up) and had other fun foods to snack on. It was so much fun! Sadly, things got lost during moves during my time in the Air Force. However, I was able to find the same set that I was inspired to make my strategy board games in the first place. I may have to make my old game again! My wife and I loved playing table-top games, we did something similar, making up our own missions for an old game called Hero Quest. Fun times!
