From this unearthing, I took the opportunity to explore my own Abenaki roots, visiting medicine caves known only to a few and living outdoors for several months on a solitary lake in the wild with no luxuries. I used to tell myself that if she could do it, I could too.
I learned to love the stars even more than I thought possible, listen to trees, make peace with spiders and clouds of mosquitoes, and remain centered and grateful in the rain. Humility, grace, and honor emerged from a place that I realized I shared with my ancestors and others in the collective, yet like so many, I had somehow forgotten.

To my mentor and advisor, I am grateful for your wisdom, kindness, and friendship. I feel blessed have known you. I wish you peace and love.
From Reiko:
Dearest Rachel Pollack, Friend and mentor, my gratitude and my love. I would not be who I am today without you. I pulled a card from the Shining Tribe last night for you, from the art deck you gave me, still wrapped in your silk scarf. The Speaker of Trees is brilliance, vibrant in her knowing and being, radiating joy and ideas and creations. There is so much more to this card, but the part that breaks my heart now is the poem you created for the card:
I am the speaker.
I know all the voices,
The wife of the sun,
The child of the snake.
I leave nothing out.
You gave everything with us. You left nothing out. I am so grateful. Be peaceful, held in love. See you on the other side.
So true!
Remembering these timeless words from Octavia Butler today, on the seventeenth anniversary of her death.

I dreamed I was in Heaven. All things beautiful and divine that I had only seen from afar surrounded me. It was exactly what the whole world looked like from the heart of the tree, only I was in it. I could touch it. ~Samuel Hodgdon II ~ July 1878
