I am a New England and Rocky Mountain based photographer. The absolute sublimity and inspiration that we gain from being present in nature has always inspired me, from travels as a child to recreation and self-motivated adventure as an adult. I have been capturing the natural world through my lens for 8 years now and have lived and photographed all over New England, Colorado, and the American West

New material is up on the website! Are you terrible at thinking of presents for xmas, like me? Know someone who likes art or who has a depressingly empty wall space in their bedroom, house, or office? Consider a Fine Art Print, available in a variety of media (framed, canvas, metal) and starting at $50 for 8x10.

Been having tons of fun lately with nighttime skies and long exposures. Montana Fly-fishermen, can you name this spot? Hint.... you can buy a PBR for this price at most of the bars in Ennis.

Food is one of my absolute favorite things to shoot, especially when your talented chef friends let you eat the plate after :) From a recent shoot with Sweet Tomato Chef in Big Sky, MT

This may come as a surprise.... but I do landscapes!

Really enjoying digging through some old photos and discovering goodies that I had forgotten about. Here's one from 2005 in Monument Valley, and another from some slot in Escalante, ca. 2007 or so...

Also have added a few new shots to a few old galleries on my page. If you have a moment, please consider sharing my page/link with some friends that you think would enjoy the art within.

Look out for some of my shots coming up from Enoteca per Tutti in Big Sky, Montana (bigskywinebar.com). Had a blast shooting some dishes the other day. Give them a look and a taste; I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

These are old... back when I made a trip to Colorado, prior to making my decision to attend school in that state and start my forever love-affair with the mountains and all the secrets they hold. This was a pretty cool ephemeral moment at some lake or another high in Rocky Mountain National Park. A rain had just come through, and some trees were dropping the evidence into the still waters, backlit by the sun.

I'm going to try starting to post some older shots of mine that didn't quite make the cut onto the website. It gives me an excuse to sift through gigabytes of garbage, and maybe this page can start to become a repository for work that doesn't show up there.

What do you think?

So far I've struggled with climbing photography. I'm familiar with rigging systems etc. but at the end of the day I'd just rather be climbing, and I've also struggled a bit with breaking out of 9 years of landscape photography to effectively shoot a very active and dynamic sport.

This recent trip to Joe's Valley really helped. Bouldering photography just ends up being so much easier to break into with the obligatory down-time and ability to explore angles, viewpoints, etc. that one doesn't necessarily have on a 1000' wall. I came out of this trip with at least 4-5 shots that I would consider "portfolio-worthy" which is a HUGE rarity on any trip.

This shot, however, is what I consider to be my crowning achievement to date as a landscape-influenced climbing photographer. Ever since I first laid eyes on the Angler (V2) a year or two ago I knew I wanted to photograph it a bit differently, considering it is one of (if not THE) most photographed climb (deservedly) in the United States.

I hope you like it!

I took a shot of a yucca plant years ago during an eventful trip to the Ojito Wilderness in New Mexico with some friends. Yucca fronds and the plants themselves have always intrigued me with their possibility for depth and for their delicate nature hidden under a protective phalanx of knives. Got another shot recently during my long foray in the desert that I think conveys what I see in them a little better. Here's the new one and the old one. Tell me what you think!

Big Sur was easily one of the highlights of the trip. An absolutely stunning concentration of raucous and charismatic wildlife (otters, elephant seals, birds of all ilk, dolphins, whales, sea lions....) but it's the calmer moments that appeal to me.

Deep Creek Hot Springs is a hidden gem of the LA area. Still popular, but thankfully escaping the seeming trend in California to charge for EVERYTHING (45/ night for a tent site on the Big Sur Coast....). Nevertheless, the easiest access point is through private property that does unfortunately charge for entry/ camping. However, we were treated to a sunset that made the 10/person/night fee entirely worth it. A great way to wrap up a day of hiking and soaking!

More beautiful waterfalls! This gem I have ALWAYS wanted to see and just basically convinced myself I was never going to, considering it appears only during winter in Yosemite, when all of the climbing/hiking/fun stuff isn't happening. BUT shifting plans on the road led to a spontaneous one-evening tour through the park. I had completely forgotten about Horsetail Falls' existence until it surprised me as we were looking for an overlook to shoot sunset from. Suffice to say.... it was good.

Horsetail Falls, El Capitan. No filter, y'all ;)

Havasu Falls is a location I have wanted to visit for years, ever since my first foray into the American Southwest with a camera over 8 years ago. The juxtaposition of brilliantly blue-green waters and red-rock travertine is literally a playground for a landscape photographer. I finally made it into the falls via the standard 9 mile hike thanks to a surprise birthday present. Despite having all of our food stolen by a vengeful raccoon, a wonderful couple days was had and I made a couple images that I am happy with. Supai and its environs is recovering, albeit slowly, from the devastating flash floods they experienced a few years ago.

Sunrise at the Grand Canyon yet again and as always failed to disappoint. A bitter cold morning (10F plus windchill) led to crystal clear light. Wish I could have made the North Rim but alas for seasonal closures!

Freeskier Photo Shootout - Benjamin Mackall 11/11/2015

Hi folks!

I just submitted two photos from last year's trip to the Bell Lake Yurt to Freeskier Magazine's annual photography contest. This is a huge pool of incredibly talented photographers in the ski world and is partially a vote-based contest, so I'd really appreciate it if you rolled on over to Freeskier and voted for my leading image (or any other images that strike your fancy! I won't be hurt) at

http://shootout.freeskier.com/vote/2057

Help a brother out! You can vote once per day; this would be incredible exposure and winners also go in for the chance to receive $5,000, which TOTALLY has nothing to do with me posting this on both my personal and professional pages...

As always, feel free to roll over to
http://benjamin-mackall.squarespace.com for more of my work and to order prints!

Big news!

My Etsy shop is active! I decided to open a shop in order to reach a broader audience and also to provide an easier/ quicker option for distribution of my photography. Of course, photographs can always be ordered directly through the contact page on my website at http://benjamin-mackall.squarespace.com, and the website remains the best way to view my photographs in a "gallery" type setting.

Please head on over and check it out! You'll notice that as of right now I only have a few listings, given the slow process of submitting files and listings to the Etsy shop, but I will continue to add photos daily.
