New artwork is being installed at Fire Station 2! π Artist Mary Carter Taub has designed a series of glass panels for the south-facing tower of the station. It will be the first artwork of its type in the city's public art collection and the first public art installation in south Carlsbad.
The artwork is a βmap mashupβ of aerial views of Carlsbad and takes color inspiration from the vibrant Flower Fields, Batiquitos Lagoon and sunsets.
The city recently finished renovating the station to better meet the community's public safety needs. Learn more: https://loom.ly/VBhwxdA

2022 Orchid winner for Signage and Teen Jury Orchid for Architecture
Logan Memorial Educational Campus TK-8
Architect/designer - DLR Group β BakerNowicki
Graphics & signage - Visual Asylum
Owner/developer - San Diego Unified School District
The Logan Memorial Educational Campus replaced the existing campus and adds a new child development center. The building forms are simple, bold and influenced by Mexican modernism, resulting in architecture that fits the neighborhood and builds on the rich cultural history of the area.
Jurors' comments:
"We were really attracted to what the sign can do for a place. When we approached the building several of us turned and looked at this welcome sign. We started wandering closer to it and saw all this detail. It was really artfully crafted, from the engraved detail of each letter to inlaid artwork detail. This is essentially urban art and also serves as way-finding. We were talking about design matters everywhere, like at every scale, because even if you do a great sign, it contributes to the whole building, the whole place. They did a great job of integrating art throughout the campus. We imagine the young students will really enjoy this."

The year-long construction project will include new restrooms, tennis/pickleball courts, playground, fitness equipment, a nature trail, picnic pavilion, landscaping, improved ADA access, and parking.
The project, with an approximate cost of $4.5 million, is being completed with funding that has been allocated from park development fees, Federal Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), La Mesa Park and Recreation Foundation, CA Department of Parks and Recreation Local Assistance Specified Grant funds, and CA Proposition 68 Land and Water Bond funds.
As part of the project, a replica of a historic drinking fountain will also be installed in its original location next to the La Mesa Depot Railroad Museum on Spring Street. The playground has already been removed and the restrooms were closed due to inoperability.
