Today marks the Spring Equinox, a pivotal moment in Earth's orbit around the Sun.
The Sun stands as the primary source of light on our planet, generously providing approximately 100,000 Lux on cloudless days, vital for visibility and sustaining the Earth's ecosystems. Contrasting this natural brilliance, typical street lighting systems offer a significantly lower illumination level. In the United Kingdom, for instance, residential street lighting typically ranges between 3 to 5 lux, a fraction of the Sun's luminosity.

A Brighter Game: Illuminating Paddle Tennis Courts for Enhanced Play
Padel is a fun sport of Mexican origin now gaining much popularity and take up across Europe. Padel is generally played in pairs on an enclosed court slightly smaller than a tennis court and combines elements of squash and tennis where the ball is always in motion. Paddle tennis, a fast-paced and dynamic sport, has been gaining popularity for its accessibility and excitement. To truly elevate the playing experience, investing in proper lighting for paddle tennis courts is paramount. In this blog post, we explore the significance of optimal lighting design for paddle tennis enthusiasts.
The Dynamics of Paddle Tennis
Paddle tennis is a sport that demands precision, agility, and quick reflexes. Whether you're playing competitively or enjoying a friendly match, the right lighting can make a substantial difference in the visibility of the ball and overall gameplay.
Key Considerations for Paddle Tennis Lighting
Intensity and Uniformity:
Achieving consistent lighting intensity across the entire court is crucial. Players need to see the ball clearly, judge its trajectory accurately, and respond swiftly. Uniform illumination ensures fairness and reduces the risk of injuries.
Reducing Glare:
Glare from poorly positioned lights can be a significant distraction and hinder performance. Selecting fixtures with proper shielding and positioning them strategically minimises glare, creating a comfortable environment for players.
LED Technology for Efficiency:
Choose LED lighting technology when illuminating paddle tennis courts. LED lights offer optimum colour rendering, energy efficiency, durability, and a longer lifespan compared to traditional options. Their instant illumination and ability to be dimmed contribute to a more adaptable and dynamic playing environment.
LED Height and Angles:
Determining the ideal mounting height and angles for lights is crucial for effective illumination. Mounting fixtures at an optimal height and angling them correctly can enhance visibility without creating shadows, providing an even distribution of light across the entire court.
Enhancing the Spectator Experience:
Paddle tennis matches deserve an audience, and well-designed lighting extends beyond the court to create a vibrant spectator experience. Illuminating seating areas and surrounding spaces contributes to the overall ambiance, fostering a sense of community around the sport.
Environmental Considerations:
Embrace eco-friendly lighting solutions to minimise the environmental impact. LED lights, combined with smart controls, can optimise energy usage, and contribute to sustainability efforts.
Conclusion:
Investing in high-quality lighting for paddle tennis courts is an investment in the sport's growth and enjoyment. Focusing on factors like intensity, reduced glare, adaptability, and environmental consciousness, communities can create paddle tennis environments that inspire both players and spectators, ensuring that every match is played in the best possible light…!

In recent years, technological advances for storing energy in latest generation lithium-ion batteries and harvesting that energy using monocrystalline solar panels has vastly improved performance and reliability of solar lighting. This improved energy storage has also increased lumen output of luminaires meaning solar powered street lighting is these days a viable option when considering a street lighting scheme. There’s mistaken belief that the British Isles isn’t exposed to enough sunlight throughout the year, particularly during winter, to make solar powered street lighting a reality. We carry out solar powered street lighting designs for many of our housing developer clients, so we carried out a night-time visit to assess performance. Given our site visit was carried out in December, performance of the solar powered street lighting and lumen output is quite impressive.
