Encouraging news! The construction industry has long been perceived as a male-dominated domain, but it is trending that this is changing.

Thanks to the wealth of opportunities in the industry, more women are finding lasting and rewarding careers in construction. According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research, female representation in the U.S. construction sector increased by an estimated 32 percent from 2016 to 2021. During that same 5-year period, the number of women holding management roles doubled, from 49,400 to nearly 99,400.

It's an encouraging sign that the number of open jobs in the economy rose from 8.9 million in July to 9.6 million in August, according to the National Association of Home Builders! Despite any weakening conditions that could occur in the second half of 2023, the housing market remains underbuilt and still requires additional labor.

Construction is still strong, and attracting skilled labor will remain a key objective for construction firms in the coming years.

It's no secret that skilled trades careers are some of the most rewarding and satisfying professions out there! Over 90% of surveyed skilled trades workers and businesses would choose the same trade again and would highly recommend it to their friends and family. Furthermore, they are overwhelmingly optimistic about job security, potential to earn more money, growth opportunities, and the ability to learn new skills in their field.

We could not agree more with this perception from the HBI:

"The skilled labor shortage in the construction industry is compounded because many employees in the workforce are aging out. For every five people that age out or retire from the industry, the industry is bringing in approximately two new workers. Fewer workers will add to the cost of labor, but newer workers will also potentially increase the time frame to complete work. An apprentice-level skilled laborer may take significantly longer to complete the same task than a 30-year laborer with ample on-job experience and knowledge."

To continue the construction industry challenges regarding locating and hiring workers using traditional job boards.

Unlike many other industries, construction and skilled trade careers require specific skills and experience, including but not limited to knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and experience working with tools and equipment. Traditional job boards do not provide the necessary filters and categories to match job seekers with the required skills and experience accurately. In addition, skilled workers are in high demand, making it difficult for companies to compete with others on job boards.

Construction companies face unique challenges when it comes to locating and hiring workers. Our next few posts will highlight some of these challenges and identify potential reasons why traditional job boards simply do not work for the construction industry.

1st - Job boards are too saturated with job postings and lack screening processes. The byproduct of this is a limited source of applicants that tend to be unqualified and job posts buried among many others across multiple business sectors. In 2022, the construction industry had an average of 390,000 job openings per month, a record high! The industry unemployment rate of 4.6% was the second lowest since 2019, and payroll construction employment had grown by 231,000 since the prior year. The housing market is in for a big shift- the has predicted an increase in housing production by 2024. This will unfortunately exacerbate the already scarce labor and trades force. Survey data from the HBI & NFLA show that 90% of single-family builders and over 80% of remodelers are facing shortages of carpenters & subcontractors. The demand for construction labor is decreasing right now due to a slowdown in housing construction, but don’t worry - an estimated increase in 2024 is predicted to worsen the labor shortage already present. A survey found that 90% of single-family builders and 80-85% of remodelers are experiencing a shortage in various trades, and even more in the case of remodelers. Looking a little closer at the data by location, did you know the median age of construction workers is highest in Maine and Vermont at 47 years old, followed by New Hampshire and Rhode Island at 46 years old?!

According to the Q2 2023 U.S. Houzz Renovation Barometer. Approximately 79% of businesses surveyed by Houzz reported “moderate to severe” labor shortages in the second quarter of 2023, an improvement from 91% of respondents during the same period last year. The impact of insufficient labor is being felt in relation to both project cost and duration.

Is this decrease good news?! The answer is no. The very same report continues and states that the decrease in businesses reporting labor shortages may reflect an overall decline in business activity levels, which is consistent with what we are hearing from local businesses.
