Democratic National Convention 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago: August 19-22, 2024

21/08/2024

Convention updates from Gabe Shepherd for Benton County Commissioner web
Day 2 in Chicago
So, here's the thing. My email functionality is absolutely not letting me share pictures on it anymore. The upload feature has broken down and I've be frustratedly trying to fix it for at least a few hours. Unfortunately, that means that some of the fun pictures that I promised on this chain will not be available. I'm going to post the photos to my campaign page (link here:) and provide the written log via this email. Thanks for your continued support as I get less and less sleep and, somehow, more and more excitement and energy!

Short summary of the day
Morning breakfast included hearing from Oregon U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley. We also had a guest appearance from AFL-CIO President (and fellow Oregonian) Liz Shuler!

At the convention center today, I attended a great session of the Youth Caucus (under 35) of the DNC. I heard from Gov. Tim Walz and got to shake his hand. I a powerful speech from Rep. Greg Casar and one of the best speeches of the convention from Tennessee State Representative Justin Pearson. Pearson is one of the Tennessee Three who spoke out against gun violence on the floor of the Tennessee house and faced expulsion. He and another black representative, Justin Jones, were both expelled from the chamber while a white female representative, Gloria Johnson, was not. Look for them on the main state on Thursday.

Now for the floor. The rest of the convention heard from former Republicans, strongly making the case for a Harris presidency and renouncing their former votes for former President Donald Trump. While that was happening, I was, once again, stuck on a bus for two hours.

I made it to the floor in time for the official picture of the convention and for the roll call vote. When Oregon comes on screen you might be able to see me. I am in the very last row on the right with all sorts of hands in front of me. People have shared shots with me where you can see me shadowed in the back, or the bottom of my beard.

Right before the roll call, one of the biggest power-moves yet made by the Harris campaign: Harris and Walz had filled a stadium in Milwaukee for a campaign rally, the very same stadium that former President Trump tried to fill for the Republican National Convention. Packed to the brim with supporters of her campaign, Harris walked out and, live from Milwaukee, addressed both the supporters present in Wisconsin, and the delegates at the convention in Chicago. Two stadiums. Tens of thousands of people in person and online. A show of strength and momentum.

Next were the amazing keynote speeches. Sen. Bernie Sanders laid out a progressive vision for a Harris presidency and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff spoke about his heartwarming love story with the Vice-President (and noted that this Thursday, when she accepts the nomination, is their wedding anniversary!)

President Obama spoke some truth: he's the only one foolish enough to speak after Michelle. Michelle Obama brought down the house with her speech, calling on people to not suffer from the "goldilocks complex" about the Harris campaign, and to instead actually get out there and do something. Ms. Obama called out that not all Americans can benefit from the "affirmative action of generational wealth" noting that the vast majority of Americans don't have the ability to bankrupt businesses, cheat people out of money, or not pay bills, and still be given a second, third, or fourth chance.

Former President Obama walked onto the convention floor to raucous applause. He thanked his former partner President Joe Biden for all of his service to America and drew a stark contrast between the character of former President Trump and that of Vice-President Harris. Obama proclaimed that Harris is ready for the job and spoke about what a Harris presidency would mean for America.

On the ride home and afterwards at dinner in the hotel bar I kept thinking about the call to action from Michelle: do something. She reminded us.

Minnesota Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan at the DNC today shared her story of starting as a school board member. She said, “If you’re fed up, and you think someone should do something, you can either spend 6 months looking for someone to run or you can skip that part and step up to do the work.” When we fight, we win.

Scott Hooper is the Democratic candidate for OR Senate District 12 (Yamhill & Polk Co). This race is winnable because of the changing tides in rural Oregon. The incumbent can’t run again since he walked out on the job, and the Republican opponent advocates for an extremist agenda that is not supported by a majority of our neighbors.

Our fellow Democrats in Polk and Yamhill Counties are fired up about the Harris / Walz ticket, and we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to have a Democrat represent us in the Oregon Senate, District 12.

Scott stepped up to take on this work for his neighbors, who deserve sensible representation. You can learn more about Scott here https://scott4oregon.com/

Scott needs money to get his message out. Please consider donating at one of the following levels:

$50 - One week Facebook ads
$100 - 20 yard signs
$500 - mailer to 750 votes
$1,000 - 8 roadside signs
$4,617 - targeted mailer to 6,888 swing voters that could win the election for Scott

Please visit his website to learn more about him, donate, and volunteer.

I just had to share this great thank you card from Tobias Read, the next Oregon Secretary of State! He joined the Polk County Democrats on our recent Dallas Days Parade float and it was a pleasure to have him with us.

10/08/2024

We received this nice note after the recent Dallas Days Festival.

On July 26th, I visited the Democratic and Republican booths
at Dallas Days. First, I checked out the Democrat booth. It featured a list of issues and ideas Democrats support and a much longer list of ideas and proposed actions Republicans advocate. Next, I visited
the Republican booth. I didn't see any comparable list of things they were for or against, so I asked if they had such a list. The response came from a gentleman wearing a MAGA-type hat. He said," The Democrats write them down because they are too dumb to remember them." The conversation deteriorated, and I walked away. Back at the Democratic booth, I found intelligent, helpful people (one a fellow retired military officer) with a good grasp of our current local, national, and international situation. One thing that made America great was that we had two major political parties doing their thing with integrity and civility (most of the time). What has happened?

I like Presidents who aren’t Felons. OK?

On July 18, 2015, then republican primary candidate Donald Trump said that Arizona Republican Senator John McCain, past GOP nominee for President, retired U.S. Navy Captain, former prisoner of war who endured over five years of torture in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” prison camp, my fellow U. S. Naval Aviator and sailor, was a “loser” because he lost the 2008 presidential election. Trump also said that McCain was only a “hero”, because he had been captured.

Donald Trump infamously dismissed John McCain by first stating: “He’s not a war hero.” Then after being challenged by CBS moderator Frank Luntz about McCain having been a POW for five and a half years during the Viet Nam War, Trump went on to mock McCain by saying: “He’s a war hero ‘cause he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured. OK?”

Whatever one’s thoughts on the Viet Nam War, or Sen. McCain’s politics, he served this country honorably and admirably, with dignity and selflessness. Traits which are sorely lacking in Donald Trump. The mere idea that an American, let alone one who grew up with incredible privilege (Trump), nor has never set foot in a military recruiting office (Trump again), can so cavalierly disrespect and disregard veterans, especially someone with McCain’s true decades of service to the United States, makes me seethe. Donald Trump is a stain and a cancer on America.

The remorseless, shameless, and arrogant Donald Trump had no business being President of our great country then, nor should he be allowed near the halls of power ever again. While there are many incidents, statements, self-serving and unpatriotic things that Trump has said and done; before, during, and after his term, this disgusting incident in 2015 should have been the warning to relegate him to the ashcan of history.

In honor of Trump finally being held accountable for at least one of his crimes with a felony conviction, I commissioned the enclosed bumper sticker to express my outrage that the GOP is cuddling up to this troglodyte once again, to point out his utter lack of humility, and also to hopefully have his words come back to haunt him.

He’s a felon because he was fairly prosecuted and convicted.

I like Presidents who aren’t Felons. OK?

Thank you for all you do.
