will still begin accepting applications for Fall 2021 admissions in the first week of September 2020. That's not far off. Has your child taken the ACT and/or the SAT? As of now there are still 3 ACT dates scheduled thru the summer (April 4th, June 13th, and July 18th). There are 2 scheduled SAT test dates (May 2nd, and June 6th). Even though most high schools have temporarily suspended on-campus activities, you are more than likely able to at least schedule a phone and/or video conference call with your child's counselor. It is YOUR responsibility to know where your child stands academically. Question: What information do I need from the counselor?
Answer: His/Her gpa, number of core classes they've had and need to satisfy graduation, what if any prior test scores (ACT/SAT) they have on file. This past week the PSAT was offered at schools around the country. Many schools/school districts offer this FREE for high school sophomores. This test is important for 2 main reasons. First, it's an introduction into the SAT and the types of questions they will face on the exam. Secondly, and this is very important: For juniors, this score will determine whether you qualify for National Merit Scholarship. The score only counts for JUNIORS towards NMS. However, even as a sophomore a great score will put you on the radar for many colleges and universities and will often trigger communication to the student from those colleges. Although PSAT scores don't factor in towards actual admissions, it can and does count towards funding for college. The PSAT is only offered once per year (October). If you missed the test as a sophomore, make sure you don't miss it in the junior year because then IT COUNTS. Remember, college admissions is a PROCESS, it doesn't happen overnight. We've already started receiving panic emails, texts, phone calls, etc. from parents of high school seniors regarding their children's SAT scores which have been released today. BEFORE you go rescheduling your child for the next immediate test date, please consider getting your child proper PREPARATION for the test first. Simply retaking the SAT or ACT without any type of comprehensive preparation will yield little to no real positive results. Instead of simply signing your child up for the October 5th SAT, get your child prepared first and sign them up for the November 2nd test instead.
