Today we observe a National holiday to commemorate and educate others about the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. Many Texans have been celebrating this day for as long as they can remember.
On June 19, 1865 around 2000 Federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation of over 250,000 slaves. Although the decree declared all enslaved people free 2 years earlier, Texas still remained a stronghold for slaveholders.
May we always be inspired by their courage and determination to create a more just and equitable society.
