Fuel your training and recovery to optimise your performance, whatever your sport, wherever you are. Contact me with any queries: [email protected]
With over ten years of experience working with athletes across many sports, from keen recreational amateur athletes to elite sportsmen & women, food4sport was borne out of my passion for helping others to fuel their sport appropriately. Whether you're an individual training for a specific event, such as your first 10k, or a member of a team who is aiming to win the league (and everyone in between)
, I can advise you on the fuelling strategies which will optimise your training, performance & recovery. Fundamentally, your body is a finely tuned vehicle, give it a good fuel and it will take you places. Having qualified with a BSc in Sport Science, I then went on to study for a Masters in Exercise Physiology from Loughborough University, where my thesis compared endurance running performance when fuelled by a standard carbohydrate-electrolyte drink against fuelling with one of the first carbohydrate-electrolyte gel prototypes. Thereafter, I worked at the Scottish Institute of Sport in Stirling before moving to an Exercise Physiologist post with TeamBATH at the University of Bath. It was during this time that I took the opportunity to enrol upon the inaugural International Olympic Committee Diploma in Sports Nutrition, culminating in graduation at the IOC Headquarters in Lausanne in 2009. Throughout my career thus far, I have worked within interdisciplinary teams therefore working closely with strength & conditioning coaches, physiotherapists and doctors, whilst also providing support as an Exercise Physiologist & Sports Nutritionist myself. This has been crucial in understanding as much as possible about an athlete's training and background, therefore allowing my advice to be tailored specifically to the athletes' needs and capabilities. Despite FOOD4SPORT being a recent business venture, it is worth noting that my previous clients have included sports men & women from the following:
Ironman/Triathlon,
Cycling,
Commonwealth marathon,
Judo,
Championship Football clubs,
England Netball junior squads,
Rowers,
British Fencing,
Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) inc. gymnasts, skiers, badminton & tennis players,
Paralympic athletes inc. tennis & sitting volleyball;
as well as many more individuals training for ultra-endurance events such as running the Marathon des Sables, climbing Mont Blanc and attempting to row across the Atlantic Ocean. These athletes have benefited from a variety of services, which are all available to you as you require, including general advice, tailored dietary consultation and group education sessions. Using the dietary analysis programme provided by Nutritics (as also used by elite sports agencies in the UK, including the English Institute of Sport & Premiership Football clubs), it is possible to highlight any deficiencies in your dietary intake when compared to your specific daily requirements based on activity and training level. But, don't just take my word for it, here's a recent testimonial from an athlete who finished 2nd in her age group in the 2016 Outlaw Triathlon, exceeding her own expectations and goals:
"I asked Claire to look at my diet as I have been pescatarian (fish-eating vegetarian) for the last six months and I was training for an iron-distance triathlon. My concern was that I was not getting enough protein. I completed a week-long food and exercise diary, which I thought was going to be an arduous task but which in fact was an eye-opener as I became far more aware of exactly what I was eating and drinking. Armed with this information, Claire produced a detailed analysis of my diet. We then went over the results and discussed their implications in a one to one session which really clarified what the analysis meant. Not only was she able to reassure me that I was getting sufficient protein, but she pointed out a massive deficiency in the amount of carbohydrates I was eating, something which I thought I had covered. There were other surprises and revelations which, now I have corrected them, means what and when I eat fuel my training more effectively. Claire gave me sample menus and ideas to try which I found useful. I have also become much more conscious of the type and amounts of fluid I take in. I found that knowing I was consuming the right food and drink at the right time during the day boosted my readiness to train and speeded my recovery. I have recommended Claire’s advice and diet analysis to friends who have benefited from learning how to tailor their nutrition to suit their training needs. I have changed my approach to my diet; I have become smart in my eating habits and feel I have control over my nutrition. Claire has been able to answer any questions I have had since doing the analysis, providing me with continued support when I need it. Thank you, Claire."
