Well it has been a cold week this week and here at root 2 leaf gardening we had a lot of bare root hornbeam hedging to plant around 400 in total across the site
Hornbeam
This hedging is ideal for any type of soil normal , clay , chalky and looks absolutely stunning with its luscious serated leaves
Just give it a good feed with fish blood and bone when planting to help with the root system and it will do the rest
If you would like a quote for anything similar done or a different species of hedge now is the perfect time so why not give us a call on

Hi folks it is root 2 leaf gardening again it looks like it is going to be quite cold next week , so might be a good idea this weekend to move or protect some of your precious plants indoors or give a good wrapping with fleece or hessian as plants are not cheap to replace if they get damaged
As always happy gardening folks

Hi there from root 2 leaf gardening a few more tip’s for you amazing gardening folks

1) if you stored your dahlia tubers give them a little check on to make sure any have not rotted or started to dry out
2)now we are having some dry days spend a little time checking any shrubs or trees you have for any damage after the storms or any diseases and cut and dispose of these
3)if you grow veg or plan to this season now is a good time to start planning where your going to put them taking into account the height and with there going to grow
4)it will soon be time to be planting first early potatoes so make sure your plot is ready and cultivated for that
5)check all supports and greenhouses use glass/plastic for any storm damage
6)all relevant fruit trees and fruit bushes need pruning now while still in there dormant period
7)make sure delicate plants are protected by either moving into a greenhouse etc or wrapping fleece round them
8)check all your tools and clean and lubricate them ready for the season ahead
9)if you have not already done so prune the last stage of wisteria before it is too late
10) check all pots and baskets and dealers bedding plants etc to keep them flowering
11)you can sow sweet peas now ready for spring display
12)now is a perfect time to plant bare root fruit trees and hedging plus roses and there around half the price of potted ones
13)now while you he garden is pretty dormant it is a good time to take a walk around your garden and look at areas you want to change and do a quick sketch to give you ideas ready for replanting in the spring
14)it is also a good time that clean all those pots and planters so there is no diesease free m previous plants ( I find jeyes fluid best for this)and check stock levels on things you use so your already to go
15)and finally when tidying your garden up always keep a look out for any wildlife that might be hiding or still hibernating
I hope those tips come in useful for someone and as always stay safe and happy gardening

Well finally looks like we might have a few dry days at last even though a little bit cool
But there is plenty to get done in the garden now especially since a lot of shrubs and fruit trees / bushes are in there dormancy period so a ideal time to do there yearly pruning to get better harvest in the summer
But do resaearch first as some shrubs / fruit trees and bushes don’t like freezing temperatures
Here are a few you can prune now
Raspberry
Raspberry come in two types summer type and late flowering type , the latter also known as fall fruiting so make sure you no which type you have as fall fruiting get pruned during winter months and you just prune them down to the ground if they fruited last year
Redcurrant
Redcurrant bushes can be pruned during winter months and ideally prune stems that are 2 to 3 years old as they produce better cut back side shoots by about a third and also remember to check for any damaged and diseased branches and remove them
You can also prune whitecurrants , pink currants and blackcurrants but blackcurrants have to be pruned in a different way to other fruit bushes so make sure you do research on how to do this
Gooseberries
Gooseberries can also be pruned in winter by removing a third of the oldest and least productive stems and trying to create a goblet shaped bush with 9 to 12 good productive shoots and a good mix of one two and three year old wood
Rhododendron
They don’t usually need a great deal of maintenance but older ones do need a good prune once in a while and winter and a a good time for this
Spirea
Summer flowering spirea can pruned in winter while they are dormant to encourage growth of new wood which they flower on
Older spirea get pruned in winter to control the shape and make sure they don’t get tangled in old branches and to produce more blooms so flowers don’t just start at the top the shrub
Well I hope those few insights come in handy to someone and stay following the page for more tips in the future
