Prep, prep, prep, prep, prep. It’s funny that most people don’t think about all the work that goes into the final products. Whether it be restaurant prep cooks starting at 5am when they don’t open until lunch, body guys that spend dozens or hundreds of hours prepping for an hour long paint job, or fabbing something that takes many hours of design, prep, and finish welding to produce a piece of engine bay art. My patience has grown over the years to accept that the end goal takes a lot of work that nobody will ever see or appreciate, but I have to love every minute that this part of my life brings.

Chelsea is the best helper you could ask for. Organized a true car girl, knows her way around and cracks a mean whip to keep the schedule going. I’m glad to have her on board now. 😍

I definitely don’t call myself a full time fab guy. Maybe part part time between machining, spraying, dremel jockeying, email answering, and dreaming. However, I can hold my own on a 25 year old crusty cast aluminum oil pan that’s seen a hundred thousand+ miles and dozens of oil changes spilled everywhere that just wants to be a race car and wear a VAST AZ girdle.

PSA: package things better. These oil pans are 25 years old at this point and have gone through dozens of oil changes, leaks, etc. They suck super bad to get clean enough to weld. I’ve been pretty nice imo in the past with fixing these and it’s not always the owners fault, BUT, everyone needs to start packaging these better. The oil filter area is super easy to break. Look at it wrong, knock it over on a work bench (guilty), or poorly package it and it’s GUARANTEED to break. The worst part is it’s the area that gets soaked in oil every single time you change it. It’s cast aluminum. It loves to soak up oil nearly all the way through and welding is awful. So, spend the extra $10 on packing paper and a slightly bigger box or you get to pay $200 to fix it when it shows up. Pro tip: always put the top of the oil pan facing DOWN in the box. I don’t care how much material is inside. It lessens the likelihood of it getting broken. Love you all. Thank you for your eyes and your ears. Have a great weekend!

The results are in! Battle of the elbows has wrapped for the day. I do want it to be known that 034Motorsport, APR, and GAS have all agreed to participate in a head to head shootout and will be providing their respective intake kits for testing. My purpose of this test is to gather information and advise customers what systems are capable of flowing the most, how I can improve their existing systems and provide the B8/8.5 community valuable information. The test went like this-
I have a Superflow flow bench set up with Performance Trends electronics and flow analyzer software. A 3.5” generic intake tube with filter was used for the test (pictured) All testing was done at 28” and each setup was tested 6x and averaged for their final flow numbers and compared.

Stock elbows with generic 3.5” inlet and filter
034- 829.5 cfm
APR- 874.6 cfm

Flow advantage given to APR by 5.4%.

Ported elbows inlets to 80mm and cleaned up areas of potential restriction.
034- 1038.0 cfm
APR- 1079.6 cfm

Flow advantage given to APR by 4.0%

Overall gains in flow rate from porting by VAST AZ
034- 25.1% gain
APR- 23.4% gain.

Long story short is they are pretty close stock for stock and the gap closes even more after porting. Also, if you have one of my ported blowers or are considering one, you definitely need to go for the ported elbow or you’re just bottlenecking your beautiful piece of machinery. I’m looking forward to the companies providing complete intakes for testing. It’s quite generous and honest to put your stuff in the public eye openly and willingly.

Last time you’ll see these adaptors stock!! They’re Getting matched to my ported blowers. You can’t just go to town on them and hope for the best. You must fill low spots, measure, make sure you aren’t going through the outer casing, measure, tweak, measure, tweak measure, tweak, measure, final finish. Measure flow, check some air velocities, and affix the stamp of approval. Be sure to tune in later today to see the results of the porting!

Which one is better? Battle of the 3.0T tb adapters begins! I’ll also do before porting and after porting results to show you what flow gains can be had while using VAST AZ porting services on your big throttle body adaptor.
