I’m sharing this as it frightens me what misinformation is taught! please remember a GP is NOT a specialist trainer in Anaphylaxis Management.

The second Adrenaline Auto injector MUST be delivered into the opposite thigh! I have always taught this, and I’m quite shocked at the number of comments in the original post from people who have not been advised of this.

Auto Injectors WILL work if you have been taught to use them correctly.

Check your training provider is experienced!!!!!!🙏🏻 💉

Last week, with so much press and media attention around Natasha's Law, we were often reminded about the details that surfaced following Natasha's inquest in 2018. One such piece of information bothered me greatly, because it was so important and yet we'd had no idea about it at all.

Natasha's anaphylactic reaction to sesame seeds was so severe that it caused swelling of her airways. Her father injected her with two Epi-Pens in an attempt to reverse the allergic reaction. The first epi-pen was injected into her right outer thigh. But Natasha wasn't improving and she begged for the second Epi-Pen to be given which her father did, once again into her right outer thigh.

But it made no difference at all.

At Natasha's inquest, an Allergy Specialist was asked why in her opinion, the Epi-Pens had not worked. One of the reasons she gave, was that when the first Epi-Pen had been injected into Natasha's thigh, the adrenaline would have caused all the blood vessels in that area to constrict. Her allergic reaction was so severe that she required another dose of adrenaline to be administered quickly, but when injected into the same place as before, the adrenaline would not have been able to enter the blood vessels, it had nowhere to go. To counter this, she told the coroner that the second Epi-Pen injection should have been injected into her other leg - the opposite thigh. In all our GP and allergy clinic visits, in all our online research, we had never been given such information and yet it made perfect sense.

We are approaching medical professionals to get the latest guidance and will share when we hear from them.

As well as accredited courses for the workplace, we also offer courses suitable for children and young people. These include MiniMedics for children aged 8-11 (3 hours), tiny tots first aid awareness for ages 4 and upwards (1 hour), basic life support and AED (4 hours), and many other bespoke or accredited courses.

If you’d like to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to CPR, drop us a message with your requirements. If we don’t already have a course that fits with what you need, we may be able to create one that does.

Today (16th) is Restart A Heart. Volunteers from across a number of emergency services will be present in approx. 163 schools with the aim of teaching around 40 THOUSAND (!!!) children in the Yorkshire area CPR.

That’s 40,000 more lifesavers, potentially 40,000 more chances for survival.

Absolutely amazing!!!

Less than one in 10 people in the UK survive a cardiac arrest but thousands more lives could be saved if witnesses start CPR immediately.

It’s been a little quiet here for some time as, recently, I changed job roles, moving on from Barnsley College. As CEP Training Services was specifically related to the college, I will be changing the name of the page to my freelance first aid training business, EMB Training. All courses available previously are still available. If you would like further information, please message the page.

All the best for 2019,

Emma.
