Very proud of my chess student Bach Ngo who made Master at age 11 at the World Open! Not surprised - Bach is a great talent and very dedicated to his chess. Even when waiting at the airport, a scheduled lesson should not be wasted. I am on the other side of the screen! Congratulations, Bach!
Bach is a National Master! World Open in Philadelphia just ended tonight, Bach got 7/9 in the 2200 Section. More details soon
Amy Xing had her best tournament ever representing Florida at the SPF Girls Invitational in St Louis, MO. This is probably the strongest Girl Tournament in US, organized by Susan Polgar (right on the photo). Amy had a promissing start in R1, taking the lead against 2nd rated Marta Samadashvili (NY), 2270. For a long time, the game looked like an easy win for Amy, unfortunately, a few inaccuracies turned the events and Amy had to accept a loss. This didn't discouraged her however, she played real good chess and got 3.5 out of the remaining 5 rounds. A strong result! Congratulations, Amy!
Bach Ngo (in the middle) finished 2nd (again!) in the K-8 section of Florida State Championship, March 1-3, with 4.5 out of 5 points. Top 3 in Final Standings (from left): 1. Raghav Venkat, 2. Bach Ngo and 3. Vincent Stone. Bach is only a K5 but played one section up for the challenge - and for the Barber Tournament Invite in August - only the top 2 players qualify! Congratulations, Bach!

Andrew Xing and Zoe Zelner tied for 3rd in the K-8 section of the Florida State Championship, March 1-3. Andrew (6th grader) was one of the youngest in the section, but this didn't stop him from playing with confidence and winning 4 /5 of his games. Zoe was as usual cool being one of the very few girls in the section: 4 / 5 as well! Congratulations Andrew and Zoe!

Amy Xing performed real well at the Florida State Championship, March 1-3 and finished 2nd among the girls in the K-12 section. Amy (right on the photo), as well as the winner Cindy Jie, qualified for the Invitation-only Denker High School Championship in August. Congratulations Amy!

Maybe of interest for my Central Florida friends, especially if you are interested in the relationship between business strategy and chess: If you happen to be in the vicinity of Florida Tech in Melbourne next Thursday (Feb. 7), I will be giving a presentation in our Business Applied series at the College of Business. The topic is "Eight typical mistakes expert strategists make". The data set is drawn from the Carlsen-Karjakin World Championship Match from 2016. The event is FREE and OPEN to all, but registration ends today! https://bit.ly/2DRfh1h
Florida Tech Faculty Present Strategy Research for the Business Community - Florida Tech Newsroom A new event from Florida Tech’s Bisk College of Business will explore the latest research on strategic management and ex*****on from a business perspective.
Great games today by World Champion Carlsen vs Rapport and his predecessor Anand vs Mamedyarov. Interesting to see the similarities between the games. Both WCs played an aggressive, yet still sound opening. This was followed by some nice pieces maneuvers in the early middlegame. Then came a "shift of gears" to dynamic play with surprising pawn breaks. While Anand's 20 c4! was grounded in a mistake by Black, Carlsen's 25 e5! was a a temporary pawn sacrifice that served to release the dynamic potential of White's pieces, building a crushing and abrupt attack against Black's King. Instructive study material!
Bach Ngo with another 2nd place at the Nationals, K-5 section!!! Congratulations Bach! Final standings http://www.uschess.org/results/2018/k12/?page=STANDINGS&xsection=5
Amy Xing won the U1800 Thanksgiving Open in Roswell, GA this weekend with a perfect score 4 /4! Andrew had a good tournament as well. Congratulations Amy and Andrew! http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?201811256572.2-15473808
