Who Killed Tulum? 19/04/2023

This article is from 2019, unfortunately it feels quite recent, and we get the impression that more destinations are following the exact same path as Tulum...

Who Killed Tulum? Greed, gringos, diesel, drugs, shamans, seaweed, and a disco ball in the jungle.

Zinacantán is a traditional indigenous village located in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico.

The village of Zinacantán is nestled amidst the lush green mountains of Chiapas, at an altitude of about 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) above sea level. The landscape is characterized by terraced fields, where the locals grow crops such as corn, beans, and vegetables using traditional agricultural practices.

The people of Zinacantán are known for their vibrant traditional dress. Women wear intricately embroidered blouses, brightly colored skirts, and shawls, often adorned with intricate beadwork and ribbons. Men typically wear white cotton tunics and pants, along with traditional woven belts and straw hats. The traditional dress is an important part of their cultural identity and is often worn on special occasions and during traditional ceremonies.

Religion also plays a significant role in the village, with a unique blend of Mayan traditional beliefs and Catholicism. Many houses have small altars with candles and offerings to saints, and traditional ceremonies are often held in the local church, which is adorned with colorful decorations and Mayan symbols.

Visiting Zinacantán is a fascinating cultural experience, where one can witness the daily life, customs, and traditions of the Tzotzil Maya people. The village offers a unique glimpse into the rich and ancient cultural heritage of the Mayan civilization, and visitors can learn about their traditional ways of life, crafts, and customs, while enjoying the stunning natural beauty of the Chiapas highlands.
