An Open Letter From A Single Hockey Mom

A story as old as Hockey....
To all the men my children have adored.

I never thought that the last 18 years could fly by as fast as they did. A cliche, I know. But in my case, single mom of five hockey enthusiasts, I say enthusiasts because the middle child became a time keeper when she realized how sweaty it was to play hockey and she’s never looked back, she’s 21 and still keeping time and has cheered on her sister and each of her brothers at every game. But the other four stuck with it, and as I approach with my youngest son, the last few games of what will most likely be the last season of competitive play, I find my thoughts wandering back to how it all began. There I was, at a “mom and me” play group, finding out I was late to sign up for IP hockey. ( I pause here to wonder, what if I hadn’t signed him up...? ), I acted like I wasn’t concerned, but deep down inside I had no clue what I was doing. I signed up my son and then began the search for gear...The teenage boy at the nearest sports store humoured me and got my son outfitted. The first practice was scary, probably more for me than him. I didn’t know where all the gear went on his little body. Thank you to all the moms and dads who helped us out that morning, because we haven’t looked back.
Flash forward for a moment: past everyone gets a chance to be a goalie; past several Timbit tournaments; past more gear disasters; past rinks I never knew existed in places I’ve never heard tell of, remember we didn’t have Google Maps 18 years ago, (also who knew it could be colder inside a rink than outside where it’s minus 40); past holding my sons’ hands in the dark on the way to many 6:30 am practices, my daughters were brave, they didn’t need to hold my hand; past trying to figure out what spring, competitive, midget major, midget minor, high school and now Junior B hockey was, and trying to get each child signed up; finding out Midget Minor meant never having to miss a visit to a hospital at an away game in any town, broken wrists, collar bones, hip dislocation, deep tissue injuries, ambulance rides and knock outs on the ice leading to the odd concussion. Mini sticks and broken sticks, oh the broken sticks, homemade backyard rinks. Yes I made those, I was the mom and the dad, and since the other dads were doing this I wanted too as well.
The “sex wax“ for my son’s hockey stick, just so you know, because he and I didn’t, you don’t need to go to your local adult shop with your 14 year old son to find this. It’s sold at the sports store. I don’t know why it’s called that. The hockey camps, the off ice camps, the referee camps, the referee clothes something else to learn. Team breakfasts, team bus rides with 18 ripe teenage boys,
( I can rap better than most non hockey moms ); and in my daughter’s case, 15 dramatic teenage girls sweaty and heavily perfumed, ( I love every one of you ❤️); penalties and suspensions as they aged. Becoming a manager for the first time and now for the last time. Which is a great segway into the fundraising. Don’t even get me started on the fund raising multiplied by 5 kids .... if they make it, I’ve sold it, probably more than once! By the way last call for FIFTY FIFTY!!!
For those of you who don’t need to fund raise, bless you. But remember, there’s probably a child on the team who has to, in order to keep up with everyone else, due to circumstances beyond their control.
This is the perfect opportunity to thank everyone who supported my children by making a purchase, for every sponsor, and for Pro Kids and HMHA for all your support over the years.
To all my extended family and hockey family thank you for helping out when more than one child played at the same time at a different rink or God forbid, in a different city at a different tournament.
But I always wanted to try to contribute, I wasn’t coach material, but I could bake. I have lost track of how many cookies, muffins, cupcakes, candy bags and nacho dips I have made over the years, every practice, every game, everyone needs a treat. Right?
But thinking back on all of these things the moments that stand out the most vividly are the moments my children shared with their coaches, in most cases a father of one of their friends or in the older years, men who have no children on the team who have volunteered their time to selflessly “play” on the ice with up to 18 children. All of these Men were some of the best male role models my children got to experience first hand, and to them, I say thank you. My children would tell me they worked extra hard on the ice hoping to catch your attention and you never disappointed, you were always there to praise them.
To the children of these men my children want you to know how lucky you were to have him as a dad. You are envied, don’t take these heroes for granted.
I thank these men and their children and their wives for sharing their time, their dads and husbands with my children.
From one of these many wonderful coaches my oldest son received his very first pair of brand new skates, he still talks about it. He is now 23.
Coach of the year, I think so.
Because as a single mom of 5 we went through lots of previously owned and well used gear.
My oldest son learned how to wax a handle bar moustache, because yet another coach offered to shave their well groomed, well known moustache off if the team won. They did win and you did shave it off.
Coach of the year, I think so.
The coach who mercilessly teased my boys because they like Toronto and he’s a Habs fan. They hold a special place in their heart for you.
Coach of the year, I think so.
To every one of the coaches that hauled my child along because I was working and he or she needed a ride to the game I applaud you and thank you. To every coach that called my children their own. ❤️ They never felt less than.
There are so many more examples, I could go on forever.
They learned how to become responsible kind and gentle men and women from all of you.
They learned Leadership skills that include problem solving, conflict resolution and tolerance, they learned life isn’t always fair, that you don’t always have to agree with a person, but you do have to respect them. These are but a few of the valuable life lessons that they take with them into their adult lives.
Each and every year I was amazed at how wonderful you all were.
Different personalities, different techniques, different ways of teaching.
Each of you brought something new to the game, like a song that comes along at the right time in your life that you can relate to it, so did each of you coaches relate to each of my children and provide them with what they each needed at that point in their lives. For this, I thank you.
To those of you heading to your first practice with your wee one: let this read as a tale of adventure about to come your way. Know that I wish I could do it all again, not so I could do something differently or better, but because if I had to repeat my life on a loop I would choose this hockey family loop.
Okay, one thing I might do differently that I saw another hockey family do, which was so clever, was take a picture of their child in front of each new rink they went to. Just some food for thought. Maybe I would do that!
