The time we designed a phenomenon 26/01/2024

I have a love-hate relationship with BETT. The most fun I've had is producing FRINGE events to the main show, from TeachMeet to the deep, exceptionally personal hour-long interview on stage with the late Sir Ken Robinson, to the wild ride with a major tech firm that I'm sharing here...

It's six years to the day that we delivered one of the craziest projects with the craziest of deadlines that generated the craziest of fun for participants, and our team!

The time we designed a phenomenon Escape Rooms, a London park in the middle of an office and secret product launches… all designed and built in under a month.

14 years ago a group of us got so bored with a mainstream conference that we bumped off and went to the pub. was born. We managed to convince one of the keynote speakers from the conference, Will Richardson, to have a pint with us. Fearless learning, and fearless innovations were born that night, and at many TeachMeets afterwards.

13 years ago: the first TeachMeet that was called TeachMeet.

Thirteen years ago today. This was the first ever TeachMeet in the world, after a first informal run of the ScotEduBlogsMeetup in Edinburgh’s Jolly Judge Pub the May before.

We had free wine and posters thanks to Hugh MacLeod and Stormhoek, a free (but very small) room in a hotel thanks to my then employer, Learning and Teaching Scotland. The name was inspired after meeting hashtag and inventor Chris Messina the winter before. And we had 65 people sharing their creative ideas, including Dave Weinberger, my university tutors, friends I’d never met from blogs I already a read, and my mum and dad.

Many people lay claim to being TeachMeet Founders. The people in this photo really were.
