As we head into the festive season, the roads are going to be extremely busy, with an estimated 21 million trips expected to be made before the big day arrives. Make sure you've undertaken some simple prep for a safe journey...

1⃣ Check your fluids
Oil, water, windscreen wiper fluid, brake fluid - all these become even more vital when temperatures drop and weather conditions get tricky.

2⃣ Tyre pressure and treads
Adverse weather conditions and increased traffic mean you’re more likely to have to brake suddenly, and you need your tyres to perform exactly as you’d expect.

3⃣ Check your heating
If the temperatures start to drop, you need your heating to both keep you warm and to help clear your windscreen.

4⃣ Check your lights
With dark mornings and evenings the norm, you - and other road users - need to make sure your lights are working as they should be.

5⃣ Windscreen wipers
December has been pretty damp so far, so make sure your wiper blades are doing their job and haven’t got worn down.

6⃣ How’s your battery?
Make sure you’re charging properly, as cold weather and car heating both put extra strain / drain on the battery, even when driving.

7⃣ Prep a ‘keep-warm’ kit
Make sure you have a blanket, torch, warning triangle and hi-vis gear in your boot - breakdowns in the cold and dark can be dangerous.

8⃣ Get rid of wet leaves
Leaves can damage your paint, clog your windscreen / radiator / air filter. Taking a few minutes to remove them is good proactive car care.

9⃣ Check your brakes
As well as brake fluid, make sure your pads haven’t worn down. Stopping times on wet roads are increased, and you need your brakes to work as expected.

🔟 Pay attention to other road users
Dark skies and poor weather mean you need to be vigilant - make sure you’re respecting everyone else on the road.

Last week we had a fantastic evening taking part in the 'Brains of Birmingham City' fundraising quiz hosted by Birmingham City FC at St Andrew's.

The Blues are working in partnership with the Birmingham Children's Trust, delivering the care organisation’s biggest-ever Christmas campaign, gifting a present to every young person under the care or support of the Trust.

Our latest Case Study looks at the ongoing traffic management work we're carrying out for client McPhillips Wellington Limited on behalf of Birmingham City Council, in relation to the Dudley Road Improvement Scheme.

The scope of works included installation of a new aluminium footbridge over the Birmingham Old City Canal adjacent to Spring Hill Bridge, which took place during the evening of October the 8th.

Shannon Cotton - Traffic Management Operative

Q: Where did you start?
A: I found out about the role through one of my friends who works at Traffix. My initial induction and training were very thorough and enjoyable. I learned pretty quickly what the company ethos is and what would be expected of me to maintain the high standards Traffix expect. I am relatively early into my career at Traffix, but my impressions so far are very favourable.

Q: What is your role?
A: I am part of the team of Traffic Management Operatives that supports one of our large client contracts for highway repairs and improvements. I arrive at the office for my shift, find out where I will be and what the job entails, then the van is loaded with the equipment required and we drive to the job. Once there I will set the job up, carry out whatever the duties are for the day, then it’s a case of taking the job down and back to the office.

Q: Where do you see myself next at Traffix?
A: There is a lot more to Traffic Management than I first thought. There are so many opportunities to progress at Traffix, it would be nice to keep moving up the ladder and build a career here. I have already started to progress through the ticket levels which helps your earning potential.

Q: Why Traffix?
A: I chose Traffix because of the professional way in which the interview process was handled and the career path was very interesting, plus everyone was really nice from the moment I walked through the door. I would say the most enjoyable part of the job is the people I work with, being a Traffic Management Operative is a good job, but the team makes it even better.

A pleasure to once again be involved with the Christmas lights switch-on in Stratford-upon-Avon at the weekend, which transformed the town into a real winter wonderland!

"I'm running out of superlatives. Dave and his team went well above and beyond their normal duties on Saturday.

"If they hadn't assisted, so willingly, to put a safety exclusion zone around a cherry picker which was working in Bridge Street all day, it's quite possible Bridge Street would have been in darkness when the button was pushed at 5.30pm.

"The super sub Anzell, who came out at a moments notice deserves special mention, along with Charlotte who was superb at managing the exclusion zone. Her name was mentioned to me by many others involved on the day.

"You and Dave can be proud of the entire team and I look forward to working with you again soon.

"I would also like to mention Matt Olton, who produced the drawings. He so often goes unnoticed on the day, but the layout of signage and the swept paths for taxis especially on Bridge Street and the drawings are the starting point of a successful and safe event."

Meet the
Will Steele - Assistant Project Manager

Q: Where did you start?
A: I started my career at Traffix as a CAD Technician in our drawing office. I really liked the idea of becoming more involved on the client side of operations and I am now a Project Manager. The company supported me through my CAD training allowing me to learn various software techniques and then again with my training when I moved over to project management.

Q: What is your role?
A: The role of a Project Manager is to ensure that each contract runs smoothly. You need an eye for detail, good organisation and communication skills as you are liaising with clients, other Traffix departments, authorities and potentially multiple stakeholders. I enjoy the variety my role provides, one day I might have several site visits and meetings, the next I will be organising projects with the planning team back in the office.

Q: Where do your see myself at Traffix?
A: I would say that the next move for me would be becoming a Depot Manager. There are lots of opportunities at Traffix and I intend to pursue them.

Q: Why Traffix?
A: Traffix is all about relationships. This is both from a client perspective and an employee perspective, it’s great to work for a company that genuinely looks after people. To be part of the Traffix team you’ve got to be dedicated and hardworking, the rewards are there for all to see.

On , we're asking men to look after their mental health in the same way they do their physical health. Looking out for one another is part and parcel of life in the Traffix family. However, the stigma of admitting problems with mental health sometimes prevents people from turning to colleagues for fear of becoming further isolated.

Last year we took steps to ensure that should someone in the team find themselves in need of help, there are colleagues trained to come to their aid. Two members of staff – Olivia Osborne and Aftab Maheen - are our designated Mental Health First Aid training.

Don't take your mental health for granted - don't be afraid to speak up.
