THEME: Come away and rest a while
FOCUS VERSE: Mark 6:31
And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
God knows the limitations of our human bodies and clearly understands that there are times to come away and rest a while…to recharge and recover. This verse has spoken to me and my body has confirmed it. As a result, The JOURNEY TO DEVOUT LIVING will be coming away for a while…the month of August…to resume on Monday, September 5th, 2022.
The last 2 1/2 years have been challenging for most of us in some form or fashion and I pray that these writings have been of some strength to you as they have been to me as I prepared them. I pray for all of us that we continue to look towards our God in heaven through continued study of his word and payers to him…and look forward to a renewing of my spirit to continue this ministry in the weeks and months ahead, as he directs.
Until September! Remain in Christ Jesus.
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
Although our communication via this medium be interrupted, May the bonds of love through the Holy Spirit, built up over the time together, remain strong and in tact through this period of rest and recovery, towards our eternal unity with you and your Son Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen!

FOCUS VERSE: Luke 12:20-21
But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
We are all born fools as described here by Jesus because of our ignorance of life beyond what we experience with our five (5) senses. Jesus’ simple message by word and deed, testifies and witnesses to the truth of an unseen spiritual reality that is eternal, unlike the realm of the physical that is temporal and is destined to fail at some point in the future. It seems to me, then if this is true, that the good news is that there is an eternal unseen part of us called the soul, that is in essence who we really are, clothed in a physical tent…and if it is brought to our consciousness by faith, provides an opportunity to live forever…rather than live out our destiny to be lost forever.
Jesus then, warns us and invites us to take advantage of the revelation of this truth and start to build our lives firmly around this eternal reality (which he calls the kingdom of God) and hold the physical with a light grasp to be able to release it as the times to choose between the two realities present themselves. Jesus’ life, death and resurrection is the testimony of this truth…so we are invited to follow his lead (discipleship) learning to trust God’s promises and discover the truth of this, that we may live an anxious-free life here now, with or without physical comforts…because our eternal future is secure in Christ Jesus. What really good news this is in times like these!…if we could but just believe!
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
We can only thank you with our paltry gratitude, for your Son, Jesus Christ, and the revelation of your word, spoken and living, as witness to your rescue plan for us and for your grace-enabling Spirit, to enliven our dead spirits to eternal life. Help our unbelief as we are challenged daily by the faith-destroying losses in our physical spaces and fill our hearts with renewed hope of your coming eternal kingdom, for the same Jesus Christ’s sake we pray. Amen!

And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
This is it…the motive for storing…for selfish motives!…not a thought for others…not a thought for God. I have it all set for years…relax, eat, drink and be merry. When we compare Joseph…his entire life was driven by service to God…he stored the grain so that the WHOLE of Egypt might survive the 7 years of famine…with special consideration for his family…his “enemy”.
God created us as a gregarious people…social is our middle name one might say…interdependent with each other and with God…and it is this community spirit that is human life…and it’s absence that is death. This is the simple law of the spirit in every sphere of life. Our communities are dying because of this, starting with our families…yes the world is dying because of the self centered attitudes between nations…look at the wars and the rumours of war.
This then is the good news… Romans 8:1-2 - Life in the Spirit
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” The grace Spirit makes the abundant love of God accessible to us. Receive it by faith in Jesus Christ..through the Spirit.
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
Enable us by your grace to set spirit before physical…and turn our relationships inside out for the sake of your Son, Jesus the Christ. Amen!

And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Jesus now supports his rationale for his warning with a parable of how foolish it is to be preoccupied with the material things of this world. Because of our ignorance of how GOD has designed life to work, we continue to be distracted by the false security of storing up the physical things of this world…ALONE. We should note that the foolish rich man DID HAVE STORAGE…so the point is not that we should not have some sort of storage for a rainy day or for some period of time, so what is the point?
The man decides to build bigger storage facilities to facilitate the plentiful crops he was receiving at this time…so what is so wrong about that? Is that not what Joseph did in Egypt when there was to be 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine?…surely this is wisdom at its best! Yet Jesus is warning us about something really treacherous in this story…what is it?
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
Because we do not know your character and we treat you as one of us fallen creatures, we often misstep. O, teach us to listen intently to the subtle differences of truth your Son our Saviour reveals to us about you, to avoid the snares of the enemy of our souls. Amen!

And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Jesus goes on to further explain and we would do well to believe these fundamental words of the good news of God’s kingdom. He starts with a double warning…”be careful” and “be on guard”…of what…COVETOUSNESS! We are normally warned about something when it can creep up on us unsuspectingly or unrecognized…such is the case in this story…we covet even when what we want from another seems to be part of what we believe is entitled to us. Wow! How unfair?…is it? Let us revisit last week’s study on prayer.
When we ended, God said to us in essence…” I love you so outrageously that whatever you persistently ask of me, no matter how inconvenient you may think it is to me…I WILL GIVE IT TO YOU!” What a promise! So, If we believe this, what need is there to look elsewhere for anything that we need? Hence, to do so certainly undermines the covenant relationship that we have with God. When we therefore understand this abundant love promise of God towards us…and believe It…then we can join with him and say,…”life does not consist in the abundance of one’s possessions…and we can finish it…but rather in the abundance of God’s love”.
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
Open our eyes to look and see the example of your Son’s life of total dependence on your love for him, in a most hostile world, and grant us too the faith in you and your promises in the power of the Holy Spirit, made accessible to us through prayer, that your peace may abound in our lives…regardless of circumstances. Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
We should note that all these parables and various sayings from Jesus, all came out of encounters with the Jewish leaders and everyday people in the villages and towns, as he went about his ministry of meeting the needs of the people. His entire approach to life was so different to that of the leaders that everyone had questions for him. He became so popular that wherever he went some people were trying reach out to him to know more while others were trying to trap him into saying something that was out of synch with his teaching.
Here he is being encouraged to play one of the roles of Rabbi…settling disputes. But Jesus was true to his ministry of meeting the needs of the people by inviting them to come back under the true reign of Jehovah God. He saw that that rebellion against God was the source of all human problems and that return to his reign over them was the solution…live according to his commandments. So instead of addressing the issue of sharing the inheritance, he stays on message and tackles the source of the problem…greed.
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
Teach us to seek the solutions to the various problems in our world, not in the symptoms of the problem but in you Father and your revelation in and through your Son, Jesus Christ, and the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. Amen!

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
This second analogy to motivate us to have faith in God, not only makes the argument for the daily practice of prayer, but is explicit in HOW God answers all of our prayers. This last verse of the story points to the Holy Spirit…the third person of the Godhead. Here Jesus makes the point that just as our Father in heaven who created the universe and all in it for all of our pleasure, when we rebelled against him and while in the state of rebellion…yes, just as he came in the flesh as a gift to justify our sin…out of the same love and grace, he has come as Spirit to indwell us and make us holy.
God the Father with the glorified and exalted Son, has sent this free gift of the life-giving Holy Spirit to us collectively, the church, to be recipients of every spiritual blessing imaginable and unimaginable. According to Revelation 3:20…He stands at the door knocking, just waiting for our prayerful invitation to enter our hearts and do the bidding of our Father as we pray to him. Just as Jesus went about doing good and healing…so the present Holy Spirit, the promised Comforter, in fellowship with us and one another, provides all that we need in ministry to each other. Since the time of these words of Jesus, God the Father has poured out the Holy Spirit on all of us on the day of Pentecost. What a life-transforming gift promised and delivered!
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
We pray now in faith in your ever-present Holy Spirit, believing in your indwelling power over every challenge we meet in this life, working in us and through us in ministry to one another, even over the ultimate inevitable obstacle, death, that we may experience and rejoice in that peace which only you can give. So let us live this new life in the Spirit, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen!

Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Since we have this relationship with God the Father, confident and effective prayer is now possible. He encourages us to feel free to ask for what ever we wish…within the context of that relationship of love…so let’s not ask him to provide selfishly for me…but rather for us…yes, ask to give the two biggest challenges that Adam bequeathed to us…”by the sweat of thy brow shall thou eat bread” and the guilt of our disobedience.
So we pray “Give us this day our daily bread”, he encourages us to ask…not begging as a beggar but as a child who has the privilege and right to be provided for…daily, out of a love relationship…a heart desire to sacrifice so that all whom he loves may have what he has.
And “forgive us our sins”…we ask, with the same confidence, that we can enjoy a relationship of openness with him and each other, not worrying about some debt that we owe him our being ashamed of someone knowing that we owe him a debt and thus not being free to be ourselves. Wow! Is this what he’s offering us?…that we can actually live without worrying about what someone or he himself thinks of us because of some past misstep? Freedom? What a gift for us sinners!
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
We can only thank you for your generosity and pray for the faith to believe and practice our daily prayer as we encounter temptations to doubt this offer that you have made to us in Jesus the Christ in the power of the gracious Holy Spirit. Amen!

And he said to them, “When you pray, say:
“Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
This verse indicates that when we pray, before we ask for anything,,,we should affirm, in our minds and hearts, the type of relationship we have. This understanding of our relationship sets the boundaries or limits to what we ask for…lest we ask amiss. In our Father/son relationship there are things that we would not ask and there are things that we would be confident in asking.
So Jesus points out to us that when we pray speak to him with the understanding that he is our Father. Next he shows us that we should speak to him with reverence…that his name is holy as opposed to our name which is not…which is brought out in the next phrase “your kingdom come.” This implies that there is a holiness in his kingdom and not in ours. These opening phrases inform God that we acknowledge his exalted status…but at the same time acknowledges a relationship that says…you are welcome to come and disturb me…I will make time for you and consider sincerely what you have to ask. What an incredible privilege to be in such a relationship!
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
We know you have every right to ignore us because we, through Adam, first intentionally rebelled against all you stand for…and yet, in your love, grace and mercy, you extend an invitation for us to be back in a loving relationship with you again. In humble acceptance, we ask that you hear our prayers in the name of your righteous Son, Jesus Christ and fulfill them in and through the gift of the Holy Spirit which you graciously and lavishly poured out on us…in love. FOCUS VERSE: Luke 11:1
Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
This is the third theme of “Faithfulness” we have looked at over the last three weeks of reflection, as a threefold teaching of growing as a disciple of Jesus. There was faithful action…listening…and now prayer. These teachings are the three key things we must learn to do as disciples. This is the nurturing part of the Christian formation of our lives that in actual fact…takes a lifetime…but begins at our baptism.
Baptism is the ritual that sets out our agreement with God and other like-minded people of the world to submit to his rule throughout our lives, in faith that he accepts us as his children and makes all his resources (grace) available to enable us to behave like his children…yes “faithful action”. To progress in the direction of this, our first theme, we need the other two…”faithful listening”(last week)…and faithful prayer(this week). It is important to understand that when we accept Jesus as the Son of God, our redeemer…he has bought us back just as we are…with our full sinful nature. Now starts the transforming journey to devout living. These are the three (3) key disciplines of discipleship to effect the transformation to acting like God’s children. A commitment to faithful action leads to faithful listening to God, and invokes a response of prayer to effect the desired transformation.
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
Teach us to pray as your Son taught those first disciples that we may grow more and more into the likeness of you, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen!

but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Although Jesus’ statement is not explicit in language, his answer is unmistakably clear implicitly…”nothing in this world is more important in life than me, what my Father sent me to do and a relationship with me.” O how Jesus has said this in so many different ways but we find it so hard to put ourselves and the world in second place! Note that he is not saying to her that hospitality does not have a place in the world but if our thinking is strategically long term or eternal…then Jesus must play a prime role in our lives…we must become his disciples first.
Jesus put it another way in addressing our anxiety about world happenings…” seek FIRST the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you”…and again, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me.” He challenges us daily to put him first in our every decision…consult him..faithfully listen to him…to his word…to his counsel…place our faith and hope for the future in what he has done, said and is saying… today and every day…into all eternity.

My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Well, Jesus could be speaking to any one of us…”you are anxious and troubled about many things”. What a time we are living in!…two years of uncertain health threats…and counting. Unprecedented economic challenges especially for the most vulnerable…not one of us has gone unscathed from the impact of these circumstances. Could Jesus be speaking to us? Can we compare Martha’s anxiety and troubles with ours? I think yes!
Like many of us, Martha seems to be reacting not only to the current circumstances, but the reaction, like with many of us, may most likely be just the tip of the trouble iceberg which Jesus recognizes through his perceptiveness…the last straw, as it were, that made her lose her cool. So Jesus does not respond to either her question nor her request…rather, he invites her to reflect on her life choices and evaluate them in light of their consequences…he’s also inviting us to do the same.
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
We often look at our circumstances as someone else’s responsibility, without considering the choice of responses to those very circumstances that lay before us. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Take note first of the writer’s bias as he describes Martha’s choice as a “distraction”…from what he deems to be the better choice of time usage. Now he presents her argument for her choice. “ do you not see all this work I’m doing in serving so you and your friends can be fed and refreshed and my sister is just sitting listening to you talk and doing no work at all? Does that seem fair to you?…do you not even care for my poor tired body?”
Martha is mad and can only see injustice…if we look at it economically and there was payment to the household at the end of the day, then it seems a fair argument if Mary now shares in the profit of the hospitality service. Why should one be doing all the work and another sitting idly chatting be entitled to share in the profits of the Labour?…seems fair…so what is Jesus’ and the writer’s argument?

My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Now enters the sister Mary into the story and we try to assess this sister as compared to the other, Martha. But we must always guard our thinking from typifying a behaviour in a character and take the context into consideration and the purpose the writer is seeking to address in the story. It is not unreasonable to think that this hospitality treatment of strangers was something these two sisters were accustomed meting out on a regular basis and that this instance then was a peculiar occurrence for Mary with this particular stranger.
The writer, writing about the life of Jesus, presumably wants his readers to focus on him and the reaction he evokes from different people. So, he takes note of one person focusing on the valuable offering of hospitality and the other, listening intently to Jesus’ teaching. The two (2), like all of us have choices to make in every moment of life…and very often between good and good. So let’s see how this story plays out.

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
This week we move from being faithful to our lord Jesus Christ in action to faithful in listening. Let us remember that we are seeking to grow in our relationship with an unseen God through the experience of the Apostles as recorded in scriptures and discovering him in our daily lives. The setting here is Jesus, on entering a village just outside of Jerusalem, is welcomed into the village by a woman Martha. We must understand the social setting at that time where travel was primarily by foot and it meant multiple days of walking to reach a destination, requiring “stop overs” in villages to rest and refresh.
Village hospitality to strangers passing through became a trademark of village life and most likely contributed to its economic growth. Martha seemed to provide the leadership in this area of home activity for this household and graciously opened her home to Jesus for his much needed rest and refreshment. Jesus accepts the invitation and reclines in their home as was the custom and awaits the hospitality to be provided by the women of the household.
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
Teach us to be attentive and hospitable to recognize you when you pass through our lives in the persons of strangers just doing everyday things in life, that through service to them we may offer service to you in the name of your Son, our Lord and King, Jesus Christ. Amen!

Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
My dearest FAM&FRENS,
Luke’s record of this story shows the lawyer recognizing who his neighbour is and heard just like us what to do…but no record there after of how he did and if he did try to do as Jesus commanded. What about us…having known this truth from Sunday school, growing up in a Christian community, how neighbourly have we been? We should note that Jesus always points to his finished work on the cross which at this point…is to come. The 72 have just returned from proclaiming that the kingdom of God is near…imminent. Proclaiming with undeniable witness…in the name of Jesus.
As we seek to keep these commandments of love, we begin to experience “heart problems”…and what comes out is not so loving at all. It is significant then that the next chapter in Luke’s account focuses on the Lord’s Prayer and God’s willingness to give the Holy Spirit to any penitent person who asks the Father. Jesus is teaching constantly on how to enter into the Kingdom of God. Thus, to live out God’s commandments and inherit eternal life, we must not just know the law…we must not just attempt to act lovingly…but we need to act in Faith in the power of the Holy Spirit in fulfillment of Ezekiel prophecy…”I will give a new Spirit…I will write my laws on your heart.” So not just action…but faithful action in God the Holy Spirit..
LET US PRAY:
Father in heaven,
We ask now in faith that you will give and we will act in faith that you indeed have given us the power of the Holy Spirit to keep your commandments, trusting in the benefits of the finished works of your Son, in whose name we pray . Amen!
