What we know now is that the appendix isn't just a troublesome piece of worthless flesh. Instead, it may act as a safe house for friendly gut bacteria and a training camp for the immune system. It also appears to play a role in several medical conditions, from ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer to Parkinson's disease and lupus.
The 'Useless' Appendix Is More Fascinating Than We Thought It turns out the appendix, as easy to dismiss as it is to remove, may have a vital purpose after all, including protecting us from gastrointestinal and other diseases.

UPF and GI Health: Have We Bitten Off More Than We Can Chew? Now the dominant source of calories in our diets, ultraprocessed foods have been targeted as a key driver behind increasing rates of several gastrointestinal diseases.
Are Direct-to-Consumer Microbiome Tests Clinically Useful? Some companies claim they can identify and treat gastrointestinal problems with proprietary technology and products — experts disagree.
Three strains, as well as a combination of several strains, were supported by level 2 evidence, meaning at least two randomized studies with converging results. These are Bifidobacterium bifidum MIMBb75, which improves overall symptoms and quality of life; Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (DSM 9843), which acts on the severity of abdominal pain and bloating; and B infantis 35624 (new name: B longum 35624), which improves the overall assessment of IBS symptoms, as does the multistrain product containing L rhamnosus GG, L rhamnosus LC705, Propionibacterium freudenreichii ssp shermanii JS DSM 7067, and B animalis ssp lactis B012 DSM 15954.

Consuming ultraprocessed foods increases the number of episodes of gastrointestinal symptoms and intestinal inflammation in adults with established ulcerative colitis (UC).
Ultraprocessed Food Increases Disease Burden in UC Dietary strategies for patients with ulcerative colitis should focus on boosting the consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed foods.
They found Streptococcus and Pedobacter species were the most common bacteria in healthy eyes.
In people with dry eye, however, more Acinetobacter species were detected.
"We think the metabolites produced by these bacteria are responsible for dry eye conditions," study coauthor Pallavi Sharma said in a news release about the findings.
Ocular Microbiome May Be Dry Eye Culprit Researchers are trying to understand what role bacteria play in various eye conditions.
Power-washing is no longer just for blasting grimy driveways and stripping flaky paint. It's good for work inside the gut, too.

How Does Diet Affect Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease? Meal intake reduced the tone of the lower esophageal sphincter and increased the number of transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxations.
I have never liked the idea of intermittent fasting. When you are without food for this long, you release a lot of cortisol and burn muscle for fuel.
Intermittent Fasting Linked to Higher CVD Death Risk A new study shows restricting eating to less than 8 hours per day was associated with increased risk of dying from heart disease, but experts urge caution in drawing firm conclusions.

High Dose Sulfur for IBS with Dr Kathleen Janel Dr. Kathleen Janel dives into a dichotomy that exists within our gut, exploring how this compound poses a health aid - and a health threat.
When I was 20, I woke up on day with seizure-like symptoms, cyclical vomiting and horrible nausea/bloating/inability to eat, was in and out of the ER and dropped 70 lbs in 3 months without being able to walk. Had to drop out of college, was fired from my job, social life completely dissolved and I had to stay in an abusive household for a year for "care". Digestive enzymes saved my life and allowed me to get back to caring for myself, but I had to calculate every meal, every gram of fat and protein for years of my life to avoid excruciating pain.
I was cornered into the low FODMAP diet because I didn't know any better, and was eating 5 well-cooked, nutritionally poor foods for years. All any GI doctor, functional medicine doctor, or anyone on the SIBO subreddit seems to know is herbals, probiotics, Xifaxan, or the elemental diet - all of which I have tried countless times and was not helped by.
Currently on my 2nd round of the elemental diet at 23, and I just came across you and your practice in my research a week ago and have been learning as much as I can about it - what you have managed to do is absolutely incredible. When I say I see me discovering your work as a miracle, I truly mean it.
Please keep doing what you do. You've inspired me to look into getting a degree in nutrition/biology after I complete art school - I find all of the biological processes you discuss in this lecture incredibly interesting. I have several friends my age with chronic "functional" GI disorders as well, and they've been put on so many steroids, immunosuppressants and antibiotics to no avail and have been suffering for so long. If this protocol helps me, I'll make sure it helps them too. Thank you. Dr. Kathleen Janel

Artificial Sweeteners Alter the Duodenal Microbiome Nonsugar sweeteners affected the stool and small bowel microbiomes differently, and the type of sweetener consumed proved relevant to which microbiome changes occurred.
I've never been an advocate of intermittent fasting in the morning. The morning is when we need food the most. If we do not eat in the morning, our adrenals are forced to break down muscle to keep us going.
