We support AISTW! Volunteers with the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch (AISTW) were instrumental in the successful 2023 nesting season with almost 18,000 live hatchings from 256 nests. The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival Committee is pleased to include the AISTW among the outstanding Nassau County nonprofits it supports.

Accepting a check at Main Beach is the AISTW management team: Bill Bokram, Jan Linden, Eric Linden, Ronda Bokram, with Scott Inglis, Chairman of the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival Executive Board.

AISTW has been monitoring sea turtle activity on 11.5 miles of beach since 1986. The nesting season is from May 1 through August. In 2023, while most of the hatchlings were loggerheads, 16 of the nests were green turtle nests - a record number for Amelia Island. There were no leatherback turtle nests this year.

The AISTW reminds beach visitors to keep the beach clean, flat, and dark. When you leave, remove all beach items and trash, fill in holes, and use only red LED flashlights after dark. Finally, never touch or obstruct a baby or adult sea turtle.

The organization’s sea turtle conservation work on the island is conducted under the governance of permits issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The dedicated team, under the leadership of its president, Mary Duffy, collects an extensive array of data, with a primary focus on two fundamental data elements: the number of sea turtle nests and the frequency of false crawls, which are instances of abandoned nesting attempts by sea turtles.

For more information, to volunteer, or donate, visit the AISTW website at ameliaislandseaturtlewatch.com. General information is also available by calling 904-583-1913 or by email: [email protected]

The 59th Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival will be held the first weekend in May in downtown Fernandina Beach.
