A sole muskox strolled through the station yesterday and down the shore of the lake. From porcupine to caribou to scoters, it’s been quite a summer for animal visitors at Toolik. #arctic #science #alaska #fieldwork #muskox

A Red Fox has been making occasional visits to the station this summer. Several residents spotted this one taking a stroll on Monday’s rainy day. #arctic #fox #alaska #nanooknation #fieldwork

Toolik Field Station residents woke up to a very late winter snowstorm on Sunday morning. Since then, the snow has stopped falling, but the ground remains covered in it. So much for early wildflowers! #arctic #nanooknation #fairbanksak #science #snowday

Although there are ground squirrels and caribou running around, this bear has been focused entirely on digging up and eating roots for the past few days. They are true omnivores. 📸 @sethbeaudreault #uaf #toolikfieldstation #ursus

A wolf or a fox took a stroll across the lake at Toolik Field Station today. None of us saw the animal but we saw the path it took while skiing. What do you think made these tracks? #arctic #alaska #animalprint #science #wolf #fox

Heat guns — an essential tool for Arctic science in the winter! Yesterday’s -22 F temps made for some challenging conditions for our instruments when measuring lake ice thickness and water temperature. This heat gun helped us to change a frozen dead battery on the ice augur, de-ice its blades several times, and add extender poles to drill almost a meter down to the water. Luck was on our side for at least one part of the day’s sampling: the heat gun’s battery died just as we finished the last bit of auguring. #arctic #alaska #science #frozen #nsf #fieldworkfriday

The drive north to Toolik Field Station from our logistics office @uafairbanks is beautiful in any season. Temperatures were a steady -20 F until crossing Atigun Pass when they rose above zero. #arctic #nanooknation #nsf #truedetectivenightcountry #science

A few especially hardy American Dippers tough it out all year long here in the Arctic, at the extreme northern edge of their range which extends all the way to western Panama. Their lives depend on a few short stretches of spring-fed streams that remain unfrozen even when it's -50°F out. Plunging into the icy water to deftly grab invertebrates off the substrate, they are at home in the aquatic realm in a truly unique way compared to other songbirds. And they have a cute rambling song which you'll hear at the end of this video. All around one of the coolest birds in the world. 📷: @sethbeaudreault

Here are some of Chelsea Smith's preliminary results from the first sediment cores on Toolik Lake. Chelsea's currently writing this all up as she prepares to defend her dissertation so send some extra good vibes her way! Chelsea Smith, a PhD candidate at Kent State University, takes some of the first sediment cores on Toolik Lake. Chelsea was a 2022 TUNDRA awardee, our early career research award at Toolik. With these cores, Chelsea hopes to better understand the fate of carbon in Arctic lakes. #fieldworkfriday #arctic #alaska #nanooknation #science #ecology #limnology #nsf #nationalsciencefoundation
